Experimental Plasma Physics Postdoc at Los Alamos National Laboratory

The P‑4 Thermonuclear Plasma Physics Group conducts a broad range of research, including hydrodynamics, radiation transport, opacity, radiation hydrodynamics, inertial confinement fusion (ICF), magneto‑inertial fusion, and magnetized fusion energy in support of the laboratory.
Responsibilities- Field experiments at the OMEGA laser facility and/or the National Ignition Facility (NIF).
- Data analysis and diagnostic development in support of ICF and high‑energy‑density (HED) experiments.
- Collaborate closely with experimental and theoretical teams to design, execute, and interpret experiments.
Job Requirements
- Ability to carry out independent and collaborative research in experimental physics or a very closely related discipline.
- Strong technical and interpersonal communication skills, including oral and written presentations.
- Commitment to quality research, scientific excellence, professional integrity, and personal initiative.
- Ability and willingness to obtain a U.S. DOE Q clearance.
A Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering, or a closely related field completed within the last five years.
Desired Qualifications- Familiarity with HED and ICF science and experimental challenges.
- Experience with laser or pulsed‑power driver facilities for ICF or HED experiments.
- Knowledge of plasma diagnostics such as imaging, spectroscopy, interferometry, or nuclear measurements.
- Data analysis experience with MATLAB, Python, or machine learning tools.
Coverage may be required 24/7, including shifts and weekends. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager. Eligible employees may receive shift differential pay.
Security ClearanceNo security clearance is required for the position. Selected candidates will undergo drug testing and background checks, including NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 for U.S. citizens.
