Overview
Join to apply for the Mechanical Engineer (R&D Engineer 2/3) role at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). This full-time on-site position is located in Los Alamos, NM, within the Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division, DARHT Engineering, Operations, and Physics (J-6) Group.
What You Will DoThis position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
J-6 provides state-of-the-art analytical accelerator, pulsed power, beam-target, and radiographic physics capabilities in support of LANL s hydrodynamic test mission. Core responsibilities of the group include: (1) designing, modeling, and verifying beam physics in accelerators, (2) advancing beam-target interactions science and technology, (3) designing and verifying relativistic electron diodes, (4) designing and fielding diagnostics including pulsed power and non-invasive beam and plasma diagnostics, (5) system engineering support for controls, mechanical, pulsed power, and diagnostic systems for accelerators, (6) operating, maintaining, and upgrading accelerators, and (7) conducting R&D for optimization and upgrades of the accelerators.
As a member of the DARHT R&D Engineering and Design Team, the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 will provide mechanical design and systems engineering support for the DARHT accelerators.
Responsibilities by LevelR&D Engineer 2 (salary range: $104,100 - $172,200)
- Work with multi-disciplinary teams to define and execute DARHT research experiments, facility modifications, and updates. Conduct necessary analysis and modelling to define system requirements and decompose them into subsystem and component level requirements. Define and manage interfaces and necessary documentation (technical data package). Collaborate with modelling and drafting support to detail the design. Interface with procurement, sub-contractors, suppliers, and internal fabrication shops to secure hardware.
Define and perform testing to demonstrate requirement compliance. Document and communicate testing results. - Contribute to proposal, planning, execution, and publication of DARHT accelerator research and development projects.
- Apply engineering principles to define maintenance requirements including corrective, preventative, and predictive maintenance and track system performance.
- Define and maintain technical baseline criteria and documents in support of facility configuration management.
- Use engineering analysis to support DARHT troubleshooting, safety analyses, and hazards evaluations.
R&D Engineer 3 (salary range: $125,200 - $211,300)
