The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) invites applications for a full‑time, 9‑month, tenure‑track faculty position in Mechanical Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor. Full‑time faculty at UNM‑LA are required to teach, engage in service, and participate in professional development activities in accordance with established workload policies. The teaching load will regularly comprise courses in Mechanical Engineering such as Mechanical Engineering Design I and II, Engineering Statics, and possibly courses in related disciplines based on the candidate’s qualifications and interests.

To meet the unique needs of our branch campus, a portion of the teaching load may be reallocated to service or professional development activities, scholarship, or administrative duties, in consultation with the Dean and Program Coordinator. Faculty may develop courses in their specific areas of expertise and interest. All faculty members are expected to remain current in teaching best practices, adhere to accepted standards for professionals in education, and may also supervise internships, participate in curriculum development, train and mentor adjunct faculty, attend forums and meetings, engage in undergraduate research, grant‑writing, and serve on additional department and college committees as requested.

Final offer is contingent upon ability to be on campus in Los Alamos at least three days per week. Appointment begins August 10, 2026.

Position Summary

Starting salary is commensurate with degrees and experience. Base salary for 1.0 FTE is $80,000 for a 9‑month faculty position, depending on qualifications. Summer teaching may be possible and optional with additional compensation. An excellent package of benefits is provided (see (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).).

Qualifications

Minimum requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related engineering field by application date.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering by application date.
  • Experience teaching engineering lecture and laboratory courses at a post‑secondary institution, including upper‑division undergraduate courses in mechanical engineering.
  • Demonstrated evidence of experience in curriculum development, student mentoring, and/or undergraduate research.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software (Solid Works preferred).
  • A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.
