Primary Function/General Purpose Of Position

The Inpatient Paramedic provides direct patient care under the guidance of a RN or designated healthcare professional in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, and within policies, procedures, and guidelines of the organization.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provides basic patient care and tasks including, but not limited to, care and comfort, vital sign measurement, personal care and hygiene, assists with mobility, performs lab draws, ECGs, basic wound care, and other unit‑based specialty duties under the direction of an RN or Physician based on state and market guidelines.
  • Performs the ED Tech Advanced role, including colostomy care, IV insertion and removal, IV site care, transport on monitor, initiation of CPR, Foley catheter placement, identification of patients in crisis or decline with timely alerting of an RN, and other unit‑based specialty duties as per state and department guidelines.
  • Completes patient rounding as assigned.
  • Assists with giving patients instructions and discharge.
  • Administers medication safely in accordance with state scope of practice and organizational policies.
  • Provides 1:1 patient safety companion service as needed.
  • Acts as liaison between patient and nurse to report changes and concerns.
  • Provides high‑level customer service to all patients, families, community providers, visitors, and employees.
  • Provides accurate, precise, timely documentation as applicable to patient care.
  • Participates in handoff reports of pertinent information regarding patient and departmental needs upon arrival and departure.
  • Performs delegated tasks once competency has been validated.
  • Collects data within scope.
  • Completes patient screenings as applicable.
  • Promotes quality and safety by continually seeking to improve processes and systems to enhance patient care delivery.
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently, problem‑solve, and resolve conflict under considerable stress.
  • Maintains knowledge of policies and procedures.
Licensing/Certification

BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire, must obtain from approved source prior to direct patient care)
ACLS – AHA (preferred upon hire)
PALS – AHA (preferred upon hire)
Current paramedic‑level certification (required)

Education

High School Diploma or GED (required)
Successful completion of a Paramedic program at the certificate or associate degree level (required)

Work Experience

2 Years of paramedic experience (preferred)

Patient Population
  • Neonates (0‑4 weeks)
  • Infant (1‑12 months)
  • Pediatrics (1‑12 years)
  • Adolescents (13‑17 years)
  • Adults (18‑64 years)
  • Geriatrics (65 + years)
Working Conditions
  • Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads.
  • Limited travel up to 10% of time, generally ground travel.
  • Exposure to high noise levels and bright lights.
  • Exposure to physical altercations and verbal abuse.
  • Limited hazardous substances or body fluids.
  • Use of physical restraints when necessary.
  • Exposure to human blood and other potentially infectious materials.
  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions.
  • Periods of constant interruptions.
  • Key responsibilities require adherence to universal precautions, PPE, and infection control policies.
