Provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Fire Chief; manages Longview Fire Department (LFD) activities including planning, operations and training services; assures Department’s compliance with state and Federal laws and City public safety goals.
General Overall Tasks- Serves as the principal advisor to the Fire Chief on emergency services programs, developing strategies to achieve departmental goals and objectives. Interprets operational concerns, defines desired outcomes, and implements effective solutions; assumes the duties of Fire Chief when assigned or in their absence.
- Acts as Assistant Emergency Management Coordinator, representing the Fire Department in local and regional emergency services coordination and disaster preparedness efforts. Assists in overseeing citywide emergency management planning and interagency response efforts.
- Leads and manages command staff by planning, prioritizing and assigning work; training and developing personnel; evaluating performance; and resolving operational and workload issues.
- Communicates departmental directives and protocol changes, mediates complex administrative and interagency matters, and resolves sensitive issues.
- Evaluates departmental operations and recommends improvements to programs, policies, and procedures.
- Responds to major emergency incidents and assumes command when appropriate.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
- Manages administrative functions including budgeting, staffing analysis, strategic planning, purchasing and technical specifications.
- Oversees the Community Health Division and Fire Marshal’s Office to include plan review and inspections.
- Manages logistics through procurement, contract administration of apparatus, facility, equipment and supplies.
- Reviews and approves reports and maintains required records and regulatory compliance in accordance with departmental policy and applicable local, state and federal regulations.
Associate’s Degree in Fire Science or related field, and six years fire service experience including four years supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred RequirementsBachelor’s Degree in Fire Science or related field.
Required Licenses or Certifications- Must possess a valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License.
- Advanced Structure Fire Protection certification from Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) is required.
- Certification for Paramedic from Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is required.
- Certification for Fire Officer II from Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) is required.
- Work is performed in a standard office environment, with occasional on-scene response to emergency situations.
- Must maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department standards.
