The veterinary assistant supports veterinarians and technicians by cleaning and maintaining equipment, feeding, exercising and grooming patients, preparing and sanitizing surgery suites, restraining and handling patients, and performing clerical and administrative work. They deliver quality care for all patients and provide exceptional service.
Key Responsibilities- Provide compassionate care to all patients
- Greet patients and owners, take weight and vital signs upon arrival
- Triage patients, perform physical exams, treatments, and administer medication as directed by licensed veterinary technicians (LVTs)
- Calm and soothe anxious patients
- Assist doctors and technicians with medication administration or patient restraint
- Perform laboratory tests and take radiographs
- Operate and maintain hospital equipment (EKG, fluid pump, syringe pump, scales, anesthetic monitors, etc.)
- Fill prescriptions, calculate and administer medications, maintain controlled‑drug documentation and security
- Feed patients, record appetites, recognize and report any unusual conditions or abnormal behaviors
- Communicate positively with clients and ensure they feel comfortable leaving their pets
- Educate clients about insurance, wellness, and medicinal plans
- Maintain hospital cleanliness: clean equipment, kennels, facilities, and complete laundry
- Bath and care for overnight patients, ensuring all animals are groomed prior to release
- Adhere to safety and wellness regulations
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions
- Maintain accurate medical records
- Show up for work regularly; full‑time presence is essential for every shift
- Promote hospital products and services and support the organization
- Respond promptly to directions from the DVM or LVT
- Perform any duties assigned by the Manager or in a specialty area (e.g., dentistry, surgery, emergency, radiology, cardiology, neurology, internal medicine)
- High school diploma or equivalent
- One or more years of experience in a veterinary environment
- Care and Compassion—desire to build rapport and provide emotional support
- Animal Restraint and Safety—judgment and precautionary steps when handling patients
- Communication—effective interaction with clients and staff

- Dependability—responsibility in completing tasks

- Equipment Care—perform checks and maintenance of equipment
Full‑time; shift work (day, evening, weekend, and holiday as needed).
Pay Range$21 — $25 USD per hour.
