The City of Longmont’s Public Safety Department, Community Enhancement & Compliance Division, is seeking Temporary Parks & Open Space Rangers to help protect and support our reservoirs, lakes, parks, greenways, and public lands. Position Details:
- Hiring Range: $24.56-$27.29/hour.
- Status: Part-time, Temporary.
- Schedule: Various shifts based on department needs; weekends, nights, and holidays required.
- Benefits: Includes legally mandated benefits such as Jury & Witness Duty, Sick Leave, Social Security, and Medicare.

What You’ll Do:
Temporary Parks & Open Space Rangers provide resource protection, community education, and public safety throughout the City’s parks and natural areas.
Key responsibilities include:
- Patrol Union Reservoir, McIntosh Lake, and City parks, open space, greenways, and public lands to ensure visitor safety and resource stewardship.
- Educate the public and enforce City rules and regulations, investigate violations, and issue municipal summonses when required.
- Operate a wide range of equipment used in parks and open space maintenance and management.
- Engage with visitors, provide customer service, offer direction, and assist in resolving conflicts.
- Conduct daily patrols by foot, bike, vehicle, UTV, or boat.
- Provide first aid and coordinate emergency medical responses.
- Perform boating assists and rescues.
- Inspect incoming watercraft for Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS).
Working Environment:
This role is an excellent fit for individuals who enjoy physical, outdoor work and dynamic conditions. Rangers work primarily outside in varying and sometimes extreme weather. Additional conditions include:
- Long periods of walking and standing.
- Exposure to noise, dust, pollen, gases, oils, and occasionally chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and fertilizers.
- High public interaction requiring strong communication skills.
- Required weekend/holiday work and flexibility in scheduling.
- Physical capability to meet all operational demands.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have:
- Associate’s Degree in natural resource management, natural sciences, park and recreation management, criminal justice, OR
- Two years of directly related experience (e.g., natural resource management, outdoor recreation, wildlife, fisheries, ecology, regulation enforcement, boat operations, emergency medical response).
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
Special Requirements (some required within 6 months of hire):
- Valid Colorado Driver's License (required at hire).
- First Aid/AED/CPR.
- OC Aerosol Spray.
- Collapsible Baton.
- Motor Boat Operation.
- Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency desirable.
