Definition:CE I: The City of Longmont is looking for a Civil Engineer I to provide support, project engineering and management on major and complex public works and utilities capital improvement projects in the areas of wastewater collection, water distribution and water and wastewater treatment. The primary responsibilities are: (1) project management of capital projects focused on, but not limited to, wastewater collection, (2) provide technical engineering support to Operations for water utilities as needed, and (3) planning and development of budgets for capital improvement projects.
Perform all engineering functions in the administration, design, construction observation, project management, and standardized engineering work involved in standard municipal public works and utilities projects.

This job classification encompasses entry-level to journey-level work in the professional engineer series. Incumbents in this classification manage less complex projects and engineering work is performed under direct supervision. Work is reviewed upon completion. Assignments are generally routine or closely related within a framework of established procedures. As the incumbent’s development and use of judgment and analytical skills and knowledge advance, the degree of independent resolution of more complex engineering problems, work assignments and tasks should increase.
- Serve as project engineer or project manager on routine and minor public works and utilities projects including wastewater collection, water distribution and, water and wastewater treatment capital improvement projects.
- Assume responsibility for project quality, scheduling, and project finances.
- Participate in the development of designs, plans, specifications, construction scheduling, and estimates for the construction of public works and utilities projects. Perform engineering fieldwork.
- Review construction plans prepared by consulting engineers. Prepare specifications and plans, and calculate cost estimates for assigned engineering projects.
- Develop and review responses for requests for proposals (RFPs).
- Perform field inspections on various projects. Assist in resolution of engineering problems impacting compliance, inspection, and development. Interpret specifications, and provide information on pertinent City code and policy.
