Commercial HVAC Building Engineer – 2 Positions Available
California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) invites applications for two Commercial HVAC Building Engineer positions. The role operates under the Assistant Director of Facilities Management and the Supervising Building Service Engineer.
About BBSBeach Building Services (BBS) supports the university by ensuring the safe operation, maintenance, and development of campus facilities. BBS provides comprehensive support across academics, activities, and event services, contributing to a well‑rounded campus experience.
Job SummaryThe Engineer will maintain, service, repair, and inspect heating, ventilating, mechanical, and air conditioning systems, as well as associated mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and electronic systems throughout campus and the Central Plant.
Key Responsibilities- Operate, maintain, repair, and inspect heating, air conditioning, water treatment, and ventilating equipment (boilers, chillers, condensers, compressors, pumps, blower vans, valves, ducting, gauges).
- Test and adjust chemical treatments for boiler hot water, chilled water, condenser and cooling tower water.
- Diagnose and make emergency repairs to steam, natural gas, water, air, and oil distribution systems.
- Adjust air handling equipment to achieve airflow, temperature, and humidity balances for rooms or buildings.
- Repair and replace bearing, shafts, seals, rings, electrical wiring, and install mechanical system parts, gauges, valves, and pipes.
A strong working knowledge of HVAC systems for central and decentralized building plants, plus expertise in building temperature control systems and current maintenance procedures. Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills; professional image and demeanor. Experience in a university or institutional setting is highly valued. Trade‑related higher education and CFC certification are desirable.
Education and Experience- High school diploma and at least two years of journey‑level experience in boiler, heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment and systems.
- Four years of experience is preferred.
- Job requires lifting more than 40 pounds and spending roughly half the time walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing.
- BOC Level I & II Certification preferred.
- Valid California driver’s license required.
Salary range: $5,998 - $8,737 per month (CSU Classification). Benefits include CalPERS health, vision, dental, tuition fee waiver, generous vacation and sick leave, and 14 paid holidays per year.
Time Base and DurationFull‑time, 1.0 time‑base, 40 hours per week. Regular appointment.
