Volunteers of America (VOALA) is a nonprofit human services organization dedicated to serving people in need and strengthening families and communities. VOALA provides a range of services including Head Start, Upward Bound, veteran services, homeless shelters, low‑income housing, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
PAY RATE: $17.70 – $18.63 per hour

NUTRITION DEPARTMENT: VOALA operates two kitchens to support our programs, providing meals to participants.
Job Summary and PurposeThe Nutrition Aide is responsible for preparing all meals, packaging them for delivery to program sites, and cleaning up after food preparation. The role also maintains food production and ensures compliance with program, agency, and state/federal regulations such as CACFP and Head Start.
Duties and Responsibilities- Prepare, cook, and serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner for on‑premises dining and delivery to remote sites.
- Prepare raw food for cooking by washing, peeling, cutting, and seasoning.
- Monitor food during cooking, including testing, turning, and/or stirring.
- Regulate cooking temperatures of ovens, broilers, grills, and roasters.
- Properly package meals for delivery as required.
- Maintain food inventory and prepare food supply orders; ensure proper food storage temperatures and rotate stored food.
- Perform regular kitchen and storage area cleanup: sweep/mop floors, wash/scrub sinks, ovens, stove, and grill; maintain highest levels of sanitation per local and government regulations.
- Maintain a safe environment at all times in accordance with industry standards and safety regulations.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Prepare main dishes, vegetables, desserts, and snacks for children ages 1–11 according to menu, recipes, CACFP regulations, and individual child needs.
- Wash and clean cooking utensils, equipment, and maintain a safe and sanitary food service environment.
- Order food supplies and manage storage of items according to established procedures.
- Maintain an inventory and record of food service items, including quantities and specifications.
- Attend meetings and trainings as designated by agency and/or supervisor.
- Monitor food allergies.
- Other duties as required and may be subject to change.
- Pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, and provide criminal history, personal references, employment, and education verifications.
- Provide proof of TB clearance (within 6 months prior).
- Annual influenza vaccination (between Nov. 1 and Mar. 31).
- Pertussis and measles immunization.
- Health screening at the time of employment.
- Ability to interact with children in a busy environment.
- Read and write legibly in English and have general knowledge of current health and nutrition concepts.
- First Aid/CPR certified.
- Food handler certification.
- On‑the‑job training provided.
- High school diploma.
- Certifications in public health, nutrition education, food safety, or related field.
- Work experience in Head Start/Early Head Start programs.
- Knowledge of CA driving laws.
- Knowledge of nutrition practices and allergy restrictions/food substitutions.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish or another language (e.g., Armenian, Farsi).
- Team player and able to work independently.
- Promotes nutrition curriculum, activities, and initiatives.
