The incumbent assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care based on age-specific components. The Registered Nurse considers all characteristics of the individual, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences. He/she administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines and conducts psycho-education groups. The professional nurse uses skills of assessment, planning, intervening, and evaluating concerns of patients.
Duties include but are not limited to:
* Assesses patient calls and walk-ins for urgency and prioritizes appropriately.
* Recognizes life-threatening psychiatric and medical situations and responds accordingly.
* Assists with contacting veterans to schedule and/or reschedule cancelled appointments, no-show appointments, and new appointments when needed.
* Provides veterans and their family members with education regarding their illness, problems/symptoms, medications, and treatment plan.
* Refers to, and consults/coordinates care with other VA health care providers.
* Collaborates closely with other Outpatient and Inpatient MH Staff.
* Provides coverage as needed for other staff in the clinic, and for other RNs throughout Mental Health Service.
* Influencing care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team by actively participating in interdisciplinary treatment planning.
* Executing the patient's plan of care by administering medication and other treatment regiments, educating patients, family members and assessing resources in the community to assist the patient and family upon discharge from acute and residential settings.
* Managing psychiatric emergencies, such as threatening aggressive, hostile, psychotic, suicidal and homicidal patients.
Preferred Experience:
BSN preferred;
Certification in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing preferred;
At least 1 year in the locked acute inpatient MH setting preferred.
