Risk Manager – California State University, Long Beach
Join the vibrant community at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). The Risk Manager develops, implements, interprets, and manages policies, procedures, and programs designed to mitigate risk and potential liability associated with university activities and initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Risk identification, assessment and minimization — serves as the primary contact for campus community and public for campus-related risk management issues. Analyzes issues and makes decisions/recommendations to address identified risks. Interprets various laws, regulations and policies to develop risk management policies, programs, and procedures for the University.
- Tort liability and insurance program management — manages campus tort liability and commercial insurance programs, including all related fiscal responsibilities. Oversees programs such as property insurance, inland marine, student professional liability, foreign travel liability, vehicle, special event, and student travel accident insurance. Each program requires different procedures to obtain coverage and manage claims.
- Legal Holds — drafts legal hold notices advising campus individuals to preserve documents for potential lawsuits. Coordinates electronic legal hold requests with Information Technology. Represents the University during small claims and restitution proceedings, coordinating with University Counsel or the Chancellor's Office General Counsel team.

Compensation
Salary placement is determined by education, experience, and qualifications, internal equity, and departmental resources.
Hiring Range:
The hiring range for this position is $7,955 - $9,583 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The ideal candidate will have strong oral and written communication skills to convey detailed information to diverse stakeholders. They will analyze facts objectively and, in collaboration with university managers, legal counsel, and other stakeholders, develop risk management strategies and recommendations that support the University’s interests. Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community and to follow university policies and guidelines.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree required.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible risk management experience including claims management.
Preferred
- Associate in Risk Management (ARM) – National Professional Designation or Certified Risk Manager (CRM).
- Risk Management experience in the public sector.
Licenses / Certificates
Valid CA driver’s license. Employees who operate motorized vehicles for university business may need to complete a Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.
