Ground Systems Engineer II - Mechanical - Team X
Rocket Lab is an end-to-end space company delivering responsive launch services, complete spacecraft design and manufacturing, payloads, satellite components, and more – all with the goal of opening access space. The rockets and satellites we build, and launch enable some of the most ambitious and vital space missions globally, supporting scientific exploration, Earth observation and missions to combat climate change, national security, and exciting new technology demonstrations.
Our Electron rockethas become the second most frequently launched U.S. rocket annually and has delivered more than 230 satellites to orbit, all while we work to develop Neutron, our upcoming medium-lift, reusable launch vehicle for larger constellation deployment. Our Space Systems business designs and builds our extensive line of satellites, payloads, and their components, including spacecraft that have been selected to support NASA missions to the Moon and Mars and components used on the James Webb Space Telescope.
As a Ground Systems Engineer II - Mechanical, you will play a supportive role in the design, build, testing, and commissioning of launch range and test cell structures, mechanisms, and fluid systems. You will be responsible for supporting all the equipment that handles and interfaces with the Electron and Neutron launch vehicles, from the moment they leave our production facilities until they’re safely on orbit.
WHATYOU'LL GET TO DO:
- Design essential launch systems, including transporters, erectors, launchers, and ground support tooling.
- Develop and optimise cryogenic and high-performance fluid systems.
- Engineer solutions for extreme environments, including high-vibration, hazardous, and harsh conditions.
- Create detailed 2D/3D CAD models and perform system analysis to ensure the highest quality and precision.
- Lead the build of new facilities and support system certifications, ensuring that they meet all operational and safety standards.
- Drive the ongoing maintenance and operational readiness of ground systems to ensure they are always launch-ready.
- Collaborate closely with test and launch teams to ensure system performance is consistently met.
- Provide support for on-site and remote commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Support with the development and execution of detailed test plans, as well as build custom test equipment for unique challenges.
- Analyse post-flight and post-test data to drive continuous improvement.
- Maintain and manage interface control between launch vehicles and ground systems.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
- 3-4 years of hands-on experience in engineering design, testing, or operations—preferably within aerospace or heavy industries.
- Proficiency in CAD tools (Solid Works, EPDM); familiarity with NX and Teamcenter is a plus.
- Ability to thrive in fast-paced, autonomous environments.
- A proven track record in mentoring and providing technical leadership.
- Demonstrated success in guiding and developing junior team members, helping them grow and succeed.
- Experience with launch pad systems or industries such as oil & gas, mining, or process engineering.
- A background in structural design, analysis, and fluid systems (including P&IDs and sizing calculations).
- Familiarity with industrial equipment and machinery.
- Knowledge of standards such as ASME, ASTM, or NASA ground systems.
