Brief DescriptionWorking in all weathers on the front line, you will carry out maintenance and faulting duties, and develop management skills by deputising for the Team Leader. Your work will keep the nation moving every day on the railway.
About the RoleOur Technicians are the essential link between the Team Leader and Operatives, specialising in Track. You will maintain, inspect and repair the track network, working manually on rails, sleepers, ballast and associated structures. The role is fully outdoors, day and night, and you will work alongside moving trains, demanding manual work and challenging terrain. Safety, teamwork and the ability to lead when asked are critical.
You will be a role model for safe working behaviours and confident to challenge any potential risks.
A natural team player, you will lead the team when asked, check competencies, and deliver work safely. You will ensure the team meets our strict safety standards and challenge risks to keep everyone home safe.

Your Skills Matter- Leadership – lead, motivate and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery.
- Effective communicator – provide clear instructions to the team and other colleagues.
- Technical skills – knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques in track discipline.
- Safety – role model safe behaviours, arrange and implement safe systems of work, and challenge unsafe situations.
- Problem solver – find safe and effective solutions and keep skills up to date with new standards.
- Willingness to learn – continuously develop relevant competencies.
- Relevant qualification – ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2 in the discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Shifts – changing shift pattern including days, nights and weekends.
- Outdoor working – comfortable working in all conditions.
- Safe working – subject to drug and alcohol testing and medical assessment; BPSS pre‑employment checks apply.
- Driving – category B driving licence to operate Network Rail vehicles.
- Commute – within a 60‑minute travel time of the location.
- Experience arranging and implementing safe systems of work.
- Knowledge of organising and controlling safe and efficient delivery of work.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Knowledge of discipline‑specific maintenance, inspection, faulting and renewal techniques.
- Ability to work shifts in all weathers.
- Meet the required benchmark for application screening questions.
