Children & Family Service – Hackney Council

About Us

Hackney Council’s Children and Family Service is committed to delivering high‑quality, child‑centred support that helps families thrive. Our Family Support Service provides both statutory and non‑statutory assessments and interventions to children and families of all ages across the borough.

Our teams are led by Consultant Social Workers and Team Managers who champion excellent practice and ensure the delivery of outcome‑focused support designed to help children remain safely within their families while engaging positively with their wider community.

As we move toward the national Family Help model, in line with social care reforms, we are expanding our integrated Family Help teams. This is an exciting time to join a service where Family Practitioners and Social Workers collaborate closely to deliver truly holistic, whole‑family support.

The Role

We are looking for a motivated and compassionate Family Practitioner to join our Family Help teams. You will deliver practical, evidence‑based interventions to support parenting capacity, strengthen family relationships, and ensure children’s needs are met.

Your work will take place in family homes and community settings, focusing on enabling positive behavioural and environmental change. You will use approaches that promote strong parent–child interaction, improved family functioning, and a consistently high standard of care.

Working under the supervision of a Consultant Social Worker/Team Manager, you will contribute to assessments and interventions using a persistent, strengths‑based, whole‑family approach. You will draw on a range of methods including task‑centred work, behavioural strategies, observation, and systemic practice.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver evidence‑based family support interventions to promote improved parenting capacity and children’s wellbeing.
  • Work directly with children, young people, and their families in their homes and community settings.
  • Contribute to holistic, whole‑family assessments alongside Social Workers.
  • Support families to make positive behavioural and environmental changes that enhance safety and stability.
  • Promote engagement with universal community and support services.
  • Maintain high‑quality records and contribute to robust decision‑making within the team.
  • Apply persistent, relationship‑based practice to build trust and sustain engagement.
  • Work collaboratively within a multi‑disciplinary Family Help team model.
About You
  • We are looking for someone who is:
  • Passionate about improving outcomes for children and families.
  • Skilled in engaging families with diverse and complex needs.
  • Confident in delivering practical interventions using evidence‑based methodologies.
  • Resilient, reflective, and committed to continuous professional development.
  • Able to work flexibly, independently, and collaboratively within a fast‑paced team.
  • Experience providing family support or direct work with children/young people is highly desirable.
