The Role

As an IRIS Advocate you will be organising and delivering ongoing trainings for health professionals in general practices (G.P surgeries) on understanding and responding to domestic violence and abuse. You will build and maintain the specific referral pathway between yourself and GP surgeries in Newham. You will carry out risk and needs assessments, safety planning and support planning with survivors and advocate on their behalf with external agencies

Accountabilities
  • Organise and deliver trainings and ongoing support and advice to GPs and other health professionals on understanding and responding to domestic abuse
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with GPs and other health professionals in Newham.
  • Provide a high-quality case work support and information service to victims/survivors who have experienced domestic and/or sexual violence
  • Advocate on behalf of clients with external agencies where appropriate
  • Co‑ordinate risk management with external and community agencies
  • Attend case review meetings and contribute to effective team communication
  • Ensure compliance with all legal and contractual reporting requirements in relation to service delivery
  • Keep and maintain accurate and confidential records of all work undertaken
  • Ensure effective implementation of organisations equality and diversity policies and awareness and integration of an equalities and human rights agenda in all your work
  • Contribute to service user feedback and voice in service delivery and service development.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills
  • Demonstrable experience of working with women affected by domestic and sexual abuse
  • A sound understanding of the practical, emotional, social and economic issues facing women and children affected by domestic violence
  • Experience of risk assessment and management and safety planning
  • Experience of working within a multi‑agency framework
  • Experience of delivering training
  • Knowledge of, and the ability to, confidently advise on the range of options available to survivors of domestic abuse including safe housing, criminal justice and civil remedies
  • Sound knowledge of safeguarding for adults and children
  • Ability to manage own caseload, working under pressure and prioritising workload
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong crisis management skills and the ability to deal with challenging situations.
  • Flexible and open to new challenges, ideas and experiences, and able to be self-reflective
Qualifications

A registered VAWG qualification; e.g. CAADA /Safe Lives/Womens Aid IDVA, ISVA or DAPA qualification is preferred for this role.
