Marine Consultant (Bulk Carrier Specialist)

Overview

A leading international marine consultancy is seeking an experienced Marine Consultant with a Master Mariner (Unlimited) background and substantial experience sailing on bulk carriers, ideally including time served as Master.

This role is ideal for a senior maritime professional who has progressed ashore into fleet management, marine superintendent, or technical management positions and is now looking to apply their expertise within a specialist consultancy environment.

You will be responsible for delivering expert investigations, marine surveys, operational assessments, and technical advisory services to clients across the shipping, insurance, offshore, and legal sectors.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct casualty investigations and incident analyses, preparing clear, structured technical reports.
  • Carry out vessel surveys, condition assessments, and operational audits.
  • Provide consultancy on bulk carrier operations, including cargo handling, loading/discharging, stability, and safety procedures.
  • Support expert witness work as required.
  • Advise on compliance, ISM/ISPS, Port State Control issues, and vetting processes such as Right Ship.
  • Collaborate with shipowners, P&I Clubs, insurers, charterers, and legal teams.
  • Contribute to internal knowledge sharing and the development of best practice standards.
Required Experience & Qualifications
  • Master Mariner (Unlimited) CoC with significant sea‑going experience on bulk carriers.
  • Ideally time served as Master on bulk vessels.
  • Proven shore-based experience such as Fleet Manager, Marine Superintendent, Technical Superintendent, DPA or similar.
  • Strong knowledge of dry bulk operations, cargo systems, vetting, compliance, and safety management.
  • Experience in investigations, incident reporting, or operational problem‑solving.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical capability and commercial awareness.
