We’d all like amazing work to do, and real work-life balance. That’s waiting for you at Sainsbury’s. Here, everything in our Sainsbury’s stores starts out in Sainsbury’s Commercial. Whether it’s the product, proposition, packaging or price, or the fact that something tastes great, our team is responsible for all food, non-food and Clothing items available in Sainsbury’s stores, digitally and on demand.

You’ll discover it’s incredibly fast-paced. People here are in it together and not afraid to take risks. They’re enthusiastic too, and their amazing leadership team is right behind them. The knowledge and experience you gain here could set you up for career moves anywhere else in the business. So, if you’re passionate about your products and just as hungry to learn, you’ll fit in perfectly.

Our Grocery Food team plays a key role in shaping the products our customers enjoy every day. You’ll join a collaborative, commercially driven team working closely with major brands and cross-functional partners to deliver a distinctive, value-led offer for our customers.

More About the Role

As a Buyer for Grocery Food, you’ll own and deliver the commercial strategy for your category. You’ll analyse performance, build compelling customer-led ranges and identify opportunities for growth across branded and Own Brand ranges. You’ll implement pricing and promotional activity, and lead cross-functional projects that drive market share and profitability.

Your category will include major suppliers, giving you the chance to work with some of the biggest names in the industry. You’ll manage a sizeable category so prior buying experience is crucial in this role.

More About You

You’re a commercially minded buyer with strong negotiation skills and the ability to build productive relationships with major FMCG suppliers. You excel in fast-paced environments, make data-led decisions and can balance short-term trading delivery with long-term category strategy. You’re confident managing complex categories, optimising secondary space and delivering clear commercial results.

You collaborate well with cross-functional teams, communicate clearly and can adapt your style to influence stakeholders at all levels. You take ownership, stay curious and thrive on improving category performance.

  • Ability to analyse financial, customer and market data to make commercial decisions.
  • Experience managing supplier relationships and negotiating cost prices or terms.
  • Capability to build commercially effective product ranges in a competitive market.
  • Proficiency in implementing pricing and promotional plans.
  • Ability to prioritise workload effectively across multiple projects.

We are committed to being a truly inclusive retailer, so you’ll be welcomed wherever you are and wherever you work. Around here, there’s always the chance to try something new – whether that’s as part of an evolving team or somewhere else across the business – and we take development seriously and promise to support you. We also recognise and celebrate colleagues when they go the extra mile and, where possible, offer flexible working.

When you join our team, we’ll also offer you an amazing range of benefits. Here are some of them:

This increases to 15% off at Sainsbury’s every Friday and Saturday and 15% off at Argos every pay day. We’ve also got you covered for your future with our pensions scheme and life cover. You’ll also be able to share in our success as you may be eligible for a performance-related bonus of up to 20% of salary, depending on how we perform.
