The International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) is an independent global science organization dedicated to strengthening the world’s information ecosystem. Headquartered in Switzerland, the IPIE provides governments, industry leaders, and civil society with rigorous, actionable scientific assessments of threats to the information environment.
As the only scientific body systematically organizing and evaluating research across this domain, the IPIE works with hundreds of contributors worldwide to produce authoritative, evidence-based insights that support policy and governance decisions.
The RoleThe IPIE is seeking an exceptional senior leader for the role of Director of Policy and Strategy. This is a high-impact, outward-facing leadership position working closely with the President and Executive Director to advance the IPIE’s mission of improving the global information environment through independent science.
The IPIE may appoint up to two candidates, with at least one based in the UK or Europe. Responsibilities may be tailored to regional or thematic expertise.
The Director(s) will play a central role in ensuring that the IPIE’s research informs technology policy, public debate, and institutional decision-making worldwide. The role is intellectually demanding, strategically significant, and situated at the nexus of science, policy, and institutional leadership.
Key Responsibilities- Serve as a strategic partner to the IPIE’s leadership, shaping organizational priorities and long-term positioning.
- Set direction on the IPIE’s most consequential external partnerships and guide their sequencing and development.
- Develop and advance high-value relationships across government, industry, and philanthropy, leading them toward collaboration and long-term institutional support.
- Shape strategic briefings and partnership proposals in alignment with the IPIE’s scientific priorities.
- Drive the IPIE’s institutional and field-building strategy by identifying new initiatives, partnership models, and funding architectures that enhance long-term scientific impact.
- Translate the IPIE’s research into high-impact policy collaborations with governments, technology companies, philanthropic partners, and scientific institutions.
- Represent the IPIE in major policy processes, multilateral environments, and global governance conversations.
- Strengthen the IPIE’s standing as an authoritative scientific body in public and policy domains.
- Represent the IPIE at high-level meetings, conferences, and global policy forums, with international travel as required.
- Act as an ambassador for the IPIE in media and policy environments.
- Build trust with senior stakeholders through thoughtful and substantive engagement.
- Doctoral degree or equivalent experience in public policy, law, science diplomacy, technology policy, or related fields, with a strong record of scholarly or policy-relevant publishing.
- Senior-level experience in policy, research, science, or closely aligned areas.
- Proven ability to manage and coordinate research programs.
- Demonstrated success in advancing high-level partnerships across government, industry, and philanthropy.
- Track record of translating complex research into real-world impact, partnerships, or institutional support.
- Near-native fluency in English; proficiency in an additional major or UN language strongly preferred.
- Experience working with international organizations or global policy environments.
- Understanding of philanthropic and institutional funding systems.
- Experience contributing to strategy in a growing or entrepreneurial organization.
- Familiarity with CRM systems;
Salesforce experience strongly preferred.
Depending on location, the role may be offered on an employment or consulting basis. As a senior leader within the IPIE, you will play an integral part in shaping the organization's global impact. Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
