Our mission is centred on education, conservation, and inspiring visitors through safe, up-close encounters with these incredible reptiles. Alongside crocodiles, our reptile house features Galapagos tortoises, emerald tree boas, and Komodo dragon, creating a truly one-of-a-kind working environment.
To provide the highest standards of daily husbandry, welfare, and behavioural management for a designated group of species. The Zookeeper plays a crucial role in animal care, conservation, and visitor education while ensuring safe, efficient, and ethical operations in line with welfare legislation and organisational values.
Roles And Responsibilities Animal Husbandry & Welfare- Carry out daily husbandry routines including feeding, cleaning, health checks, and enclosure maintenance.
- Monitor and record animal behaviour, appetite, condition, and welfare indicators (aligned to the Five Domains or equivalent).
- Prepare diets in accordance with nutritional guidelines, veterinary advice, and species‑specific requirements.
- Plan, deliver, and evaluate enrichment programmes to promote physical and psychological wellbeing.
- Support positive reinforcement training techniques to assist veterinary procedures, crate training, weigh‑ins, and daily management.
- Assist vets and senior keepers with routine and emergency procedures.
- Administer medications, supplements, and treatments under veterinary instruction.
- Perform detailed daily welfare checks and elevate concerns promptly.
- Deliver engaging talks, demonstrations, and behind‑the‑scenes experiences when required.
- Act as an ambassador for the zoo’s mission, values, and conservation messaging.
- Provide polite, informative interactions with visitors while maintaining safety and professional boundaries.
- Support positive guest experiences by keeping public areas clean, safe, and well-presented.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across departments, including Veterinary, Education, Visitor Experience, Maintenance, and Horticulture.
- Support training and mentoring of junior staff, students, and volunteers.
- Communicate clearly during daily briefings, handovers, and radio use.
- Assist with seasonal events, biosecurity protocols, animal moves, and operational projects.
