The Role

An opportunity has arisen for a fixed term vacancy within PICU for a Band 5 Staff Nurse. Previous PICU experience desirable although not essential as training will be offered to successful candidate. Critical Care is a 22‑beded unit caring for a variety of patients including emergency and elective surgery, cardiac services, orthopaedics, trauma, general medical, oncology, ENT, neurology and neurosurgery, and plastic surgery with responsibility for lead service provision throughout Scotland, and referrals from other centres and Europe.

As part of a multidisciplinary team, the post holder will have responsibility for assessment of care needs and the development of programmes of care, and/or the implementation and evaluation for these programmes, ensuring the delivery of high quality care to patients.

MINIMUM REQ. Part 8 or 15 on NMC register. Part 1 on NMC register must be competent in looking after adult ICU patients. Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential to become part of the Multi Disciplinary Team.

Key Responsibilities
  • To provide a high standard of nursing care within the clinical area to ensure that patient needs are assessed, care planned, implemented and evaluated, and that there is consultation and involvement of patient/carers.
  • Responsible for maintaining patient records within agreed standards and ensuring high quality record keeping within area of responsibility.
  • Contributes to the development of programmes of care, and provides advice to junior staff concerning the treatment of complex patient groups.
  • To delegate staff with due regard to individuals capabilities utilizing available skill mix appropriately.
  • To ensure that patient care is individualised to encompass spiritual and cultural needs of the child and family.
  • In the absence of the senior charge nurse/deputy assume responsibility for the management of daily operational responsibilities in the ward, including the deployment and supervision of staff to ensure smooth running of the ward.
  • Workload is determined by the needs of the service. The post holder will be responsible to the senior charge nurse for clinical guidance and professional management, work review and formal appraisal of performance.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of effective use of resources, including staff, supplies and departmental budget.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job
  • Candidates must be educated at Degree level with child or adult branch and have an interest in critical care nursing.
  • Experience desirable.
