There is a fantastic opportunity for a staff nurse with an interest in ophthalmology to work in the Corneal and External Diseases service at Moorfields Eye Hospital on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract to cover maternity leave.
Job summaryThe successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team that assesses and cares for patients in the Corneal and External Diseases outpatient department and will also support the nurse‑led Corneal Cross‑linking service at the main branch of Moorfields at City Road (Oriel). You will be expected to provide comprehensive, ongoing care and support for patients with Corneal and External Diseases conditions, ensuring education and information for patients and working closely with senior nurses and other team members.
Flexibility, enthusiasm, and commitment to the NHS Quality Agenda and Moorfields Nursing Strategy are essential.
• Assess and manage care needs of patients in the Corneal and External Diseases service, implement and evaluate care provision.
• Coordinate outpatient clinics, ensuring patients are seen and assessed by all multidisciplinary team members, supervise junior staff and students.
• Participate in the development of care for patients, working independently and autonomously, ensuring safety and dignity of service users.
• Assist in delivering core nursing duties and support the Corneal Cross‑linking (CXL) procedure in both scrub and circulating nurse roles, including setting up trolleys and supporting the Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) during CXL procedures.
• Apply knowledge across ophthalmic work procedures, administer prescribed medication, advocate for patients, ensure patient‑oriented care, and maintain high standards of clinical care.
• Conduct comprehensive assessments, perform ophthalmic nursing procedures and treatments, document accurately, and educate patients and carers on compliance with treatment and medication.
- Registered General Nurse / First‑level degree.
- Experience delivering evidence‑based practice.
- Understanding of clinical governance.
- Willingness to undertake ophthalmic training or course.
- Evidence of continued professional development (desirable).
- Experience teaching others (desirable).
• Current UK professional registration.
• Subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
• Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous convictions.
