Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse (adult or paediatric registrant).

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic nurse to join our teenage cancer unit, caring for young people aged 13-19 years old.

You must be an experienced band 5 or band 6 nurse (paediatric or adult) with haematology/oncology experience. You will have the opportunity to share and develop knowledge and skills in caring for a range of solid tumours and haematology cancers. You will care for patients undergoing a range of treatments including bone marrow transplant, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

You will be required to demonstrate experience and skills in this area and have leadership, development and organisation skills in order to coordinate safe efficient delivery of care to this patient group.

Our unit is committed to the care of young people going through a difficult time in their lives; we work closely with the Teenage Cancer Trust ensuring we treat the young person and not just the cancer. The unit has a group of dedicated nurses who aim to make the unit a pleasant environment.

Main duties of the job

Maintain a high standard of clinical work when carrying out nursing procedures.

Administering medication (including chemotherapy) as per prescription and protocols.

Responsible for the safe custody of medication, including checking and administration.

Help manage staffing across your own ward but also the division and offer support as and when needed.

Ensure compliance with our clinical governance framework, you will motivate colleagues, champion service user safety and dignity and drive continuous improvement.

Work with (and educate) more junior members of the team (as well as student nurses) to promote excellent standards of practise.

  • Demonstrates evidence of professional development in line with KSF, maintains updated portfolio and is able to lead staff reviews and appraisals

Knowledge and Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse Part 1, 2 or relevant section of the register
  • Accredited mentorship course or willing to undertake
  • Relevant accredited clinical course (oncology/haematology 30 credits OR equivalent)
  • BSc or working towards
Skills and abilities
  • At least 2 years' experience in this specialty
  • Proficient in chemotherapy administration and advanced IV administration skills or working towards
Communication
  • Communicates effectively verbally, in writing and in electronic formats
