Staff Nurse – Paediatric Emergency Department

The paediatric emergency department is a dynamic environment seeing approximately 30,000 children a year. It also houses a children's clinical decision unit. KCH is a trauma hospital providing care for both sick and severely injured patients. The hospital serves a diverse population reflected in our workforce. There are great opportunities to learn and develop.
The department consists of paediatric majors and minors areas, resus and a paediatric clinical assessment unit. The department sees children from newborn to 17 years of age. The band 5 nurse will have the opportunity to work in all areas supported by a senior nurse. You will be required to work within a multidisciplinary team including youth workers, health visitors, trauma nurses and safeguarding team.
You will be expected to provide high‑quality care for our children and young people. You will be supported to develop and progress by a team of experienced nurses and a paediatric development nurse. The team is highly motivated and caring.
Main duties of the jobThe candidate is responsible for following policies, procedures and standards of KCH. They should identify their learning needs and contribute to others’ learning where appropriate.
The candidate should adhere at all times to the NMC code of conduct. They should address the needs of the patients in the care with special attention to safeguarding concerns. Education of families and junior staff is an essential aspect of the role.
The band 5 role involves the safe administration of medication, effective accurate documentation and excellent communication skills for a wide range of children with differing cognitive abilities. They should follow infection control protocol.
The candidate should promote evidence‑based practice and be willing to assist with audits, trials and development of guidelines. They will be responsible for link roles within the department.
The band 5 nurse would be responsible for an identified group of patients. They will be supported to learn and develop and expected to identify their own learning needs. They should be keen to drive improvement.

Clinical Practice
- To practice within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and adhere to this at all times
- To assess, plan and evaluate individualised programmes of care for patients in partnership with the patient, their carers and the multi‑disciplinary team using a family centred approach to care
- To assist senior staff with the identification of vulnerable adults and children at risk of abuse
- To support and assist in the health education of patients and their families
- To ensure care is delivered in accordance with latest evidence‑based practice guidelines
- To ensure that patients and next of kin are informed as appropriate and as consented to by the patient themselves
- To maintain up to date and comprehensive records of care in accordance with NMC and legal requirements
- To maintain patient confidentiality at all times
