Candidate requirements:

  • Prior experience in recovery or critical care nursing.
  • Experience in cardiac nursing desirable although not essential.
  • Experience as a registered nurse in an acute surgical setting.
  • Induction and training will be tailored to suit the individual candidate’s needs, providing support for those with minimal experience caring for level 2 & 3 patients.

The unit offers a variety of development opportunities to successful candidates, including critical care diploma/degree modules and a range of in‑house study days.

Post Details

The post is working within Critical Care at the Royal Brompton Hospital in the Elizabeth Intensive Care and High Dependency Unit.

The post holder will work under the supervision of the ward manager and multi‑disciplinary team members, monitoring and maintaining excellent standards of nursing care and staff development as part of the ward team.

Key responsibilities include:

Clinical Care
  • Providing level 2 and 3 nursing to patients post‑surgery.
  • Operating and monitoring devices such as cardiac output monitoring, non‑invasive and invasive ventilation, Impella, intra‑aortic balloon pump, hemofiltration and advanced pain relief techniques.
  • Managing the continuing professional development and overall performance of student nurses and unqualified staff in Critical Care.
  • Carrying out all relevant forms of care with provisions of preceptorship/mentorship.
  • Providing flexible cover within the clinical area and for any specified areas.
Patient and Customer Care
  • Maintain nursing documentation to Trust standard.
  • Participate in nursing audit under supervision to achieve agreed standards.
  • Contribute to and participate in goal setting and benchmarking standards of care with the Sister/Charge Nurse.
  • Help develop and maintain a ward/department ethos and a standard approach to delivering excellent nursing care.
  • Demonstrate a holistic, evidence‑based approach to nursing care and day‑to‑day clinical issues.
  • Ensure awareness and compliance with Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards.
  • Be aware of the Trust’s framework of clinical governance, seeking advice where needed.
  • Identify and report clinical risks to the ward/departmental manager/modern matron in line with Trust risk management policy.
  • Provide a safe environment for the physical, psychological and spiritual well‑being of staff, patients/clients and their relatives/carers.
  • Record and report all incidents/complaints involving staff, patients and visitors following Trust policies and assist in investigations.
  • Take charge, under supervision, of the clinical needs of a defined group of patients and/or ward or department, prioritising workload according to changing clinical need.
  • Collaborate with ward team members to meet patient needs consistently at a high standard.
  • Delegate tasks and activities to a range of team members, e.g., when acting as link nurse or taking supervised charge.
  • Promote a healthy lifestyle for patients and staff in line with national strategy requirements.
  • Demonstrate research awareness during patient care.
Communication
  • Demonstrate politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in dealing with patients, visitors and colleagues, maintaining good customer relations.
  • Share good practice within the ward/department and Trust wide.
  • Promote a positive image of the Trust at all times.
  • Work cohesively with the ward team to provide the best services to patients.
People Management
  • Actively manage own annual leave in line with Trust and local policy and procedure.
  • Participate in the Trust’s appraisal and person development plan schemes by meeting with the manager annually.
