The Children's Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day and sees on average 90‑100 children a day. The department is dynamic and progressive.
Due to Covid‑19 and the relocation of our Children's ED an opportunity has arisen to increase our staffing establishment for band 5 staff nurses to extend their development in a children’s environment working alongside children’s nurses, Consultants, ENPs and GPs.
PURPOSE: If you are an overseas‑trained Nurse in the UK, you will need to have CBT and English Language Test (IELTS or OET) completed in the last 6 months and OSCE Ready for Paediatrics Nursing. You also need to ensure that CBT and English Language test meets the NMC required level. OR have NMC registration with Paediatrics.
Main DutiesYou will gain numerous paediatric emergency nursing skills through university and in‑house training, including triage, plaster of paris, venepuncture and cannulation, APLS/EPLS, Pan London ED course and many more.
- Work as a multi‑skilled member of the nursing team within the Children's Emergency Department, maintaining high standards of practice and promoting child and family‑centred care.
- Assist senior nursing staff in the clinical management of the department, maintaining high standards of practice and promoting child and family‑centred care.
- Maintain good working relationships and promote good communication within the emergency department.
- Assist in maintaining the health and safety requirements of children, young persons, carers, visitors and staff.
- Contribute ideas to improve or maintain efficiency and utilise resources effectively.
- Apply national and Trust policies and procedures in practice.
- Report accidents, untoward incidents and unsafe practices involving children, carers or staff to the Clinical Nurse Manager/Modern Matron/Head of Children’s Nursing.
- Undertake training and demonstrate competency with all equipment introduced to the practice area.
- Participate in relevant meetings.
- Assess performance of learners and untrained staff.
- Use evidence‑based findings in delivering nursing care.
- Contribute to a therapeutic environment and multidisciplinary teamwork.
- Take responsibility for own professional development, including the Scope of Professional Practice, Personal Development Plan and Professional Development Review (PDR).
- Maintain complete, legible, up‑to‑date records in line with NMC guidelines.
- Act as a Practice Assessor for Diploma/Degree students, if trained.
- Implement clinical supervision and contribute to teaching programmes.
- Safeguard children, identify and refer children and families in need or at risk.
- Demonstrate competency in basic life‑support for adults and children.
- Practice family‑centred care in conjunction with National Service Framework.
- Expand role as appropriate and take charge of a shift in the absence of a senior member when required.
- Complete basic IT competency and Group Wise training within 6 months of employment.
- RN, Child (sub‑part 1, NMC register).
- Good level of English communication.
- Legible documentation skills.
- Knowledge of research and clinical audit.
- Ability to work safely and with patient‑centred focus.
- Diploma or degree in Nursing.
- Mentorship qualification in High Dependency module or equivalent.
- Emergency Nursing qualification.
- APLS/EPLS certification.
- Previous experience in paediatric or acute settings.
- Shift and people management experience.
- Significant post‑registration experience at band 5 or above, paediatric/ambulatory or Paeds ED.
