Job Summary

We are looking for a motivated leader for the role of General Manager for Theatres, Anaesthetics and ICU at the Royal Free Hospital. The successful candidate will lead the Directorate in ensuring the provision of high-quality patient services that are clinically safe, delivered cost effectively and meet the Trust's values. We are seeking to appoint a dynamic, ambitious and talented individual to this post.

The post is ideally suited to someone with significant operational management experience.

The General Manager will support developing a culture of high performance, ownership, and accountability where safety, quality and excellence in patient outcome and experience is consistently delivered, in line with national and locally agreed standards.

The General Manager is expected to act as a change agent and be highly visible to frontline staff, demonstrating strong personal leadership and direction whilst at the same time supporting the building of an effective leadership and management team within the Directorate to ensure organisation sustainability.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the Divisional Director of Operations, the postholder will provide operational leadership for the directorate's services, ensuring delivery within agreed budgets, activity levels, and standards of clinical quality.

The postholder holds delegated responsibility for operational management, implementing national and local strategies, and achieving service objectives within available resources. Working closely with senior clinical and non‑clinical leaders, they will drive effective leadership, management, and capacity to support transformation and service delivery.

As part of the directorate triumvirate with the Head of Nursing and Clinical Director, the General Manager will foster staff engagement in delivering divisional strategy. The role includes deputising for the DDO and providing cross‑cover for other General Managers within the division.
