The Role
The Vehicle Fleet Management division is seeking to appoint one (1) Plant & HGV Vehicle Technician. You will need to have completed a recognised Commercial Vehicle Apprenticeship or have a similar background with relevant Level 3 qualifications. You will be required to diagnose vehicle faults, identify appropriate spares, be proficient in welding and fabrication, and hold a clean HGV licence. The role requires you to work on a two‑shift pattern and you should be willing to attend further training to develop your skills, including working towards a nominated MOT Tester qualification.
You will be required to undertake various repairs and servicing of all mechanical or hand‑operated plant and approximately 500 vehicles—cars, vans and specialist utility type vehicles—operated by the London Borough of Hounslow and its customers. You must ensure that all plant, vehicles and equipment comply with Health & Safety legislation and DVSA current legislation.
About The Team You’ll Be Working InAs part of the Vehicle Fleet Management (VFM) team we provide effective fleet support to the Head of Vehicle Fleet Management and services, maintaining filing systems in line with regulatory requirements. To accurately and skillfully undertake the repair of various types of vehicles, detect and diagnose any additional faults, and ensure all work is completed safely and to the Council’s and customers’ satisfaction.
We undertake service and repair work on all types of vehicles in a safe and economical manner, achieving the highest possible standards of workmanship. We carry out class 4, 5 & 7 MOT tests and act as quality controllers within DVSA computerisation systems. Other reasonable tasks may arise, and any matters detrimental to the Council’s well‑being should be reported to the Assistant Vehicle Fleet Manager.
You
- High level of knowledge of mechanical, electrical and plant including diagnostics and repair skills gained within the plant, commercial vehicle and light goods repair industry.
- Ability to work unsupervised, use own initiative and prioritise work.
- High‑level communication skills to always communicate effectively in a sensitive and courteous manner.
- Good knowledge of Road Transport legislation and MOT testing procedures of all classes of vehicles.
- Basic computer and keyboard skills.
- Have a recognised Commercial Vehicle Apprenticeship or relevant Level 3 vehicle maintenance qualifications.
- Current and clean driving licence with classes B, C1 & D1 and a clean HGV licence.
- Current DBS certificate.
