Position: Associate, Commercial: Data Privacy - Leading Global Law Firm (4-8 PQE)
Location: Greater London

Our client, a highly regarded international law firm, is seeking an experienced Data Privacy lawyer to join its London-based Technology, Data, Digital and IP practice. This is a senior hire, positioned at experienced Associate or Counsel level, with genuine scope to play a leading role in the future direction of the firm’s privacy capability.

The successful individual will work closely with the senior leadership of the practice, taking on significant responsibility for the development, management and external profile of the data privacy offering. The role is well suited to a technically strong privacy specialist who is motivated by strategic input, client exposure and the opportunity to help shape a market-leading practice over the medium term.

The firm advises an exceptional client base on some of the most complex and high-profile matters in the market, and the data privacy practice is closely integrated with wider technology, cyber, corporate, disputes and regulatory teams.

International Exposure and Culture

The practice advises clients with operations and assets spanning multiple regions, including North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Matters frequently involve coordination with overseas counsel and managing multi-jurisdictional privacy issues, with English law often forming the central framework.

The firm is known for its collegiate working environment and emphasis on quality and efficiency rather than hours-driven performance metrics. Workflows can be cyclical, but lawyers are encouraged to manage their time sustainably and make full use of quieter periods.

Key Responsibilities
  • Providing strategic data privacy advice across complex corporate and commercial matters, including public and private M&A, long-term contracts, joint ventures and restructurings
  • Advising on regulatory compliance issues across UK, EU and international privacy regimes, including GDPR implementation, international data transfers and governance frameworks
  • Supporting clients on emerging technology issues, including AI, advanced analytics, blockchain and digital platforms
  • Acting on data incidents and regulatory matters, including breach preparedness, response, regulator engagement and investigations
  • Contributing to the leadership and day-to-day oversight of the data privacy practice, including supervision and mentoring of junior lawyers
  • Playing an active role in business development, client engagement and market visibility through thought leadership and external initiatives
  • Working closely with colleagues across technology, cyber, disputes and corporate teams on integrated client mandates
Candidate Profile
  • England & Wales qualified (or equivalent) lawyer with at least 4 years’ PQE focused on data protection and privacy matters
  • Strong technical grounding in UK and EU data privacy law, with exposure to wider international regimes viewed positively
  • Experience advising on privacy aspects of corporate transactions and complex commercial arrangements
  • Confident drafting and negotiation skills, with the ability to deliver pragmatic, commercially focused advice
  • Comfortable operating in a senior advisory capacity with clients and internal stakeholders
  • An interest in contributing to practice growth, team development and the wider strategic direction of a leading privacy practice
