Welcome to Culver Law - not your ordinary law firm!

Mode: Hybrid, Full-Time
Location: London Office, Temple EC4Y

We are seeking an experienced Tax Disputes practitioner to lead the launch and development of our new Tax Disputes service. Based in our London office, this is an exceptional opportunity to build and shape a new specialist practice area within a well-established private client firm.

You will work closely with Michael Culver, Chartered Tax Adviser and author of Making Gifts of Assets (2024), to establish a high-quality offering for individuals, trustees, and business owners seeking robust advice and representation in disputes with HMRC.

About the Role

As the Partner overseeing our Tax Disputes service, you will manage a caseload of contentious tax matters, representing clients in complex investigations, compliance disputes, and appeals before the First-tier and Upper Tax Tribunals. You will combine strong technical knowledge with practical, strategic advice and a focus on exceptional client service.

This role offers genuine autonomy to shape the firm’s approach, develop a team, and establish the practice as a key part of our broader private client offering.

Key Responsibilities
  • Managing a portfolio of HMRC dispute and investigation matters, including:
    • Enquiries and investigations into income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax, and corporation tax
    • Disputes arising from disclosure facilities, COP8 and COP9 investigations, and penalty assessments
    • Negotiations and settlements with HMRC, including Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)
    • Preparing and conducting appeals before the First-tier and Upper Tax Tribunals
    • Advising clients on HMRC compliance, voluntary disclosures, and risk mitigation strategies
  • Providing practical, solution-oriented advice to clients, including high-net-worth individuals, family offices, and professional trustees
  • Collaborating with colleagues across the firm’s private client, trusts, and estate planning teams to deliver a comprehensive tax service
  • Supervising and mentoring junior lawyers and developing internal expertise within the team
Business Development and Partnership Responsibilities
  • Leading the growth and visibility of the firm’s Tax Disputes practice, with responsibility for business development and client relationship management
  • Working in close partnership with Michael Culver to design and implement a long-term strategic plan for the service
  • Building and maintaining professional networks with accountants, financial advisers, and tax specialists to generate referral opportunities
  • Representing the firm at tax and private client sector events, seminars, and industry panels
  • Contributing to thought leadership through articles, webinars, and commentary on tax investigations and dispute trends
  • Supporting cross-departmental collaboration to provide an integrated client experience
About You
  • 7+ years PQE with substantial experience in contentious tax and HMRC disputes
  • Proven track record of advising on Tax Tribunal matters and successfully representing clients before the First-tier and Upper Tribunals
  • In-depth understanding of tax procedure, investigation processes, and settlement negotiation strategies
  • Strong technical grounding, ideally complemented by CTA (Chartered Tax Adviser) or equivalent qualifications
  • Excellent communication, advocacy, and negotiation skills
  • A commercial, pragmatic approach and enthusiasm for building and leading a new practice area
  • Experience in client relationship development and professional networking
What We Offer
  • Competitive partner-level remuneration and performance-related incentives
  • Hybrid working (typically 1–2 days per week in our London office)
  • The opportunity to build and lead a new specialist service alongside a respected tax expert
  • Access to an established private client client‑base and referral network
  • Strong administrative, marketing, and operational support to help grow the practice
  • A collaborative, forward‑thinking environment that values expertise, innovation, and client care
