Role OverviewThe Data Centre Team Lead plays a critical role in overseeing operational delivery within a client data centre environment. This position is responsible for managing local engineering teams, coordinating daily technical activities, and ensuring consistent service delivery across infrastructure operations, hardware environments, and physical security processes.
The role is primarily site-based and focuses on operational delivery of routine work streams, change activity, and service continuity within one or more secure technical facilities and associated campus locations where applicable.
This role includes leadership responsibility for a rotating 24/7 engineering team, coordination of daily workloads, and collaboration with service management and client stakeholders to maintain high operational standards and service performance.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and coordinate a team of on-site operations engineers working rotating shift patterns
- Support remote operational coordination with wider infrastructure teams
- Plan, allocate, and manage daily workloads and priorities
- Ensure compliance with operational procedures, client standards, and internal processes
- Support continuous improvement of operational systems, workflows, and reporting structures
- Act as a point of escalation for operational issues and service risks
- Assemble and configure equipment racks and hardware platforms
- Perform copper and fibre connectivity works
- Install modules, interfaces, and hardware components for new infrastructure builds
- Execute hardware deployments and relocations in line with documented procedures
- Conduct installation testing and verification
- Manage technical change records for deployments and relocations
- Support logistics processes including receiving, staging, compatibility checks, and issue resolution
- Perform device configuration activities using management interfaces where required
- Replace and reconfigure small-scale network and infrastructure devices
- Authorise and manage staged decommissioning activities
- Coordinate secure removal and storage of retired equipment
- Manage disposal and lifecycle processes in line with asset governance procedures
- Ensure accurate documentation and tracking of all asset movements
- Respond to operational faults and service incidents
- Support incident diagnosis, escalation, and resolution
- Monitor operational queues and system alerts
- Perform daily operational checks across infrastructure environments
- Conduct physical walkthroughs to identify alerts, faults, and anomalies
- Verify environmental systems and infrastructure indicators
- Raise and manage incident records where required
- Maintain cabling material stock and capacity reporting
- Track spare hardware inventory and components
- Maintain asset records and configuration databases
- Maintain accurate operational reporting and documentation
- Manage access requests and approvals
- Coordinate security access processes
- Support third-party access, deliveries, and site activities
- Track external service requests through to completion
- Provide escorting and supervision where required
- Experience working in secure enterprise IT environments
- Background in data centre operations and infrastructure change delivery
- Strong knowledge of structured cabling systems and testing methodologies
- Hands-on experience with fibre and copper connectivity
- Strong understanding of infrastructure standards and compliance
- Advanced proficiency in office productivity tools
- Strong organisational and prioritisation skills
- Ability to work independently and within structured teams
- Calm under pressure in high-availability environments
- Experience with asset management platforms
- Experience with service ticketing and workflow systems
- Strong understanding of change management frameworks
- Ability to train, mentor, and onboard new team members
