Staff Machine Learning Engineer, Simulation
Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company dedicated to building the world’s most trusted driver. The Staff Machine Learning Engineer, Simulation joins the DUE (Driver Understanding and Evaluation) Machine Learning team to develop scalable machine learning and data systems, improve simulation workflows, and provide evaluation data for the Waymo Driver.
In this role, you will:
- Lead the development of cutting‑edge deep learning and machine learning models to enhance human‑led triaging and automate high‑volume workflows.
- Proactively incorporate best practices across Alphabet and the industry, developing reinforcement learning systems from human preference‑based data.
- Enhance user feedback analysis by collaborating with product and business teams to design tools for multi‑label classification, sentiment assessment, comment summarization, root‑cause analysis, and trend analysis of rider feedback.
- Oversee the production and optimization of machine learning models that evaluate Waymo’s fleet of vehicles, which cumulatively travel millions of miles.
- Drive technical direction and provide guidance to the team, aligning product requirements with company objectives.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, technical product managers, and cross‑functional teams such as Prediction, Planning, and Research to deliver key strategic initiatives.
Qualifications – Minimum:
- B.S. in Computer Science, Robotics, Machine Learning, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong coding experience in C++ and/or Python.
- Experience with foundational models, VLM, or deep learning.
- 5+ years of hands‑on experience in machine learning projects.
- Experience with ML frameworks such as Tensor Flow, PyTorch, Hugging Face Transformers, and expertise in deploying deep learning models at scale.
Preferred qualifications:
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science or a quantitative field with a focus on machine learning.
- Deep learning experience with transformers.
- Experience building applied machine learning tools, including MLOps, evaluation/validation techniques, and model performance optimization.
- Large‑scale data processing and analytical skills.
Salary Range: £150,000—£162,000 GBP. This full‑time position is based in London, England.
