The Cellular Pathology laboratory at 60 Whitfield Street (60WS) is a consolidated service involving the Royal Free Hospital (RFH), University College London Hospitals (UCLH), Whitington Health (WH), Barnet & Chase Farm (B&CF) and the North Middlesex University Hospital (NMUH). Our new, purpose designed laboratory opened in January 2020, with entirely new equipment, and houses one of the largest Cellular Pathology services in Europe.
Working closely with our academic partners in UCL and other national research bodies, the service is also a major centre for clinical trials. HSL Cellular Pathology is a UKAS Accredited Medical Laboratory (No. 9706) and HSL-Advanced Diagnostics is a UKAS Accredited Medical Laboratory (No. 9007).
We are looking for an experienced Senior Biomedical Scientist who will have an impact on all parts of our service, being actively involved in the quality management system (QMS) throughout our diagnostic cytology service. You will need to be self-motivated, flexible, and reliable and have good interpersonal skills as well as having the ability to use your own initiative and take responsibility for ones own work.
The Laboratory depends heavily on I.T. and the person should be willing to learn new computer skills where necessary, including the use of proprietary database systems, LIMS, commercial middleware applications, as well as the Microsoft suite of software.
You will be working in our centralised 830sqm state-of-the-art Histopathology laboratory at 60 Whitfield Street.

Job responsibilities- To provide a consistently efficient, accurate and world-class service to our clients and patients.
- To produce high quality work and gain a deep understanding of the techniques employed in the department.
- To participate in all areas of the service.
- To lead or assist in special laboratory service development projects as required.
- To manage and be responsible for the day-to-day running of laboratory sub-sections as required.
- To assist in specialised method development and validation as required.
- To operate and maintain laboratory equipment according to departmental and manufacturers protocols and procedures.
- To be familiar with and proficient in the use of the information technology systems within the department.
- To participate in meetings and contribute to effective communication within the department.
- To assist in planning one's own work and that of other staff within a section.
- To be involved in staff recruitment and to conduct appraisals as required.
- To demonstrate commitment to flexible working patterns, to meet the needs of the service.
- Attend off‑site clinics to support with sample preparation, staining and microscopy examination.
