OverviewWe are delighted to announce a Quality Improvement (QI) Fellow post at the Oxford Kidney Unit (OKU) on a 12‑month full‑time fixed‑term contract, funded by the Oxford Kidney Unit Trust Fund (OKUTF). The fellowship may be extended for up to 24 months subject to satisfactory progression. Applicants wishing to apply for less than full‑time arrangements will be considered. The anticipated start date would be March 2026, dependent on successful negotiations with current employers.
Post holders will spend part of their time working with the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), supporting the wider development of improvement activities. At the end of the tenure, the QI fellow is expected to have delivered successful projects within the renal department to improve patient safety and quality of care and to have supported a national programme through the RCP.
The post will also provide leadership experience for a successful doctor in training.
This role is designed for higher specialty trainees (ST) in renal medicine who already hold a training number in the UK, or for those post‑CCT looking to develop a special interest in quality improvement. The placement will be undertaken in time out of programme (OOP).
- Lead QI projects (4.5 days full‑time equivalent) within the renal department.
- Spend 0.5 days full‑time equivalent working within the Care Quality Improvement Department of the RCP in London, UK.
- Contribute to renal on‑call cover as part of the resident hospital at‑night team in Churchill Hospital.
- Mentor junior doctors and allied health professionals on audit and QI projects.
- Attend RCP improvement sessions (remote and in‑person at London and Liverpool) to strengthen QI and leadership skills.
- Present posters and/or oral presentations at conferences and events and write up QI projects for peer‑reviewed publication.
- Full GMC registration with licence to practice.
- MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
- Advanced Life Support certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent.
- Additional related qualifications (e.g. intercalated degree, BSc, BA, Med Sci).
- MRCP (UK) Nephrology or equivalent.
- ST in renal medicine currently holding a training number, or post‑CCT renal trainee.
- Minimum 2 years clinical experience within the UK NHS, with full employment history available.
- Up‑to‑date general clinical skills and fit to practise safely.
- Experience of renal medicine during training to date.
- Experience of a QI project or change‑management project.
- Experience with renal procedures such as line insertion.
- Evidence of completion of prior QI training.
- Demonstrated ability to write reports leading to peer‑reviewed publications.
- Good leadership skills.
- Effective administrative and time‑management skills, teamwork.
- Evidence of interest in or experience of teaching/training.
- Understanding of audit, clinical risk management, evidence‑based practice, patient safety, and QI principles.
- Knowledge of evidence‑informed practice and research.
- Contribution to successful teamwork.
- Experience in audit projects, formal research, or other activities.
- Peer‑reviewed presentations or publications.
The post is subject to the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust employment contract and to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) and the order 2020, requiring a Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service. The role is not advertised for non‑clinical staff.
