Specialist Therapy Technician

This role forms part of the Occupational Therapy team and provides Specialist Therapy Technician sessions to patients on a tertiary neurology ward. Patients present with a range of psycho-social, physical, cognitive and emotional problems including terminal illness.

Main duties of the job

The post involves working alongside qualified Occupational Therapists to provide direct patient intervention (both one to one and group sessions). These interventions include physical, sensory, cognitive and perceptual rehabilitation sessions.

The role also assists with administrative tasks such as maintenance of equipment loans systems, information gathering and promotion of best quality patient care.

The postholder contributes to the intensity of rehabilitation provided over seven days and will work rostered weekends within neurosciences.

An opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Therapy technician to join the acute neurosciences service at St George s Hospital. The role is based within our acute Neurology service and is part of a wider multidisciplinary team.

We offer support, supervision, in house training and the opportunity to work in a dedicated and highly skilled therapy and multi-disciplinary team.

Person Specification Qualifications and Training
  • Literate
  • Numeracy
  • GCSE s / B Tech equivalent
  • NVQ 2
  • Recognised qualification demonstrating ability to instruct, direct or guide
  • ECDL
  • First Aid
Experience
  • Previous therapy experience (Band 2 Therapy Assistant)
  • Experience of working in the NHS
  • Experience of assessing patients for disability equipment and instructing them in the proper and safe usage
  • Experience of working in a team
  • Previous experience of data inputting
  • Work in voluntary sector or community services for those with disability
  • Knowledge of multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and therapists role within MDT
  • Work with patients on a group basis
  • Experience of administrative work e.g. photocopying, filing
Skills
  • Recognise boundaries of own scope of practice and duty of care, seeking assistance as appropriate
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
