An exciting & unique opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, dynamic & self‑motivated professional to join our aseptic team at the Sutton site of the Royal Marsden.

You will be part of a team consisting of Pharmacists, Technicians & Assistants, who are always striving for excellence in all aspects of our work. We are working collaboratively as part of a Multi‑Disciplinary Team to ensure outstanding care for our patients.

About the Service

The Royal Marsden Hospital Aseptic Department provides a high‑quality service to patients and staff of the Trust. The department works closely with the Institute of Cancer Research and supports the development of innovative new cancer medicines as they enter early‑phase clinical trials. The Oak Cancer Centre, a state‑of‑the‑art facility opened in June 2023, speeds up the translation of world‑leading research into breakthroughs in treatment and care.

Role Suitability

This post is particularly suitable for those looking for experience in a hands‑on operational GMP workplace. You will gain a thorough understanding of working in a hospital pharmacy clean room environment and must be prepared to advance your learning to contribute to the quality management system in addition to manufacturing activity.

About the Role

The Senior Aseptic Assistant works closely with and supports the Chief Technician and Deputy Chief Technician in the day‑to‑day running of the Technical Services aseptic suite, providing a quality, GMP‑compliant service. Responsibilities include supplying aseptically prepared medicines—including clinical trial and gene‑therapy products—timely to all service users.

Support & Training

The role also involves setting up product trays, carrying out compounding of aseptic products, and working with 3rd‑party providers to order, process, and distribute bought‑in IV products. Full training will be given; a Band 2 position may be offered to applicants with no experience, with robust objectives set to progress to Band 3.

Responsibilities & Requirements
  • Assist in the maintenance of Technical Services facilities in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice (Rules and Guidance for Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Distributors 2017 – ‘The Orange Guide’) and current NHS guidance on Aseptic Processing.
  • Familiarise with Standard Operating Procedures and COSHH forms for Technical Services.
  • Complete the in‑house training programme and accreditation programme according to grade and responsibility.
  • Gain in‑depth knowledge and skill in handling and compounding cytotoxic medicines, biological medicines and other medicines.
  • Assemble, spray and wipe, prepare/compound products using aseptic technique in a grade A environment.
  • Dispense, label and assist in the distribution of compounded products to patients.
