Overview

The post holders must possess a thorough understanding of the technologies and methodologies relevant to Automated Biochemistry and demonstrate effective leadership and management capabilities while working collaboratively to achieve shared goals.

The successful candidate will predominantly be based at Homerton and St. Bartholomew Hospitals and must work flexibly across different teams and partnered laboratories. The post holder will retain a supervisory role in the sections of the department appropriate to their competency and will be able to carry out and manage the technical and scientific tasks for which they are responsible. Responsibilities include support, maintenance and development of quality, learning, health and safety, and Management Systems within the designated work area, working collaboratively between work areas and networked laboratories, and participating in the laboratory work roster.

Successful Band 7 candidates must be registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist and meet one of the following criteria:

• CPSM Log book (Clinical Biochemistry) if qualified before 2003.
• Registration portfolio IBMS (Clinical Biochemistry 2003 to 2004) and Diploma in Biomedical Science IBMS (Blood Sciences 2005).
• Specialist Diploma IBMS (Clinical Biochemistry 2005 onwards).
• Fellowship (Clinical Chemistry), MSc Biomedical Science or equivalent qualification at MSc level.

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms‑length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, and is hosted by Barts Health.

Between 2021 and 2024 the Partnership undertook a complex transformation programme to establish a single network of laboratories, underpinned by a single Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and single Quality Management System (QMS). The Partnership’s main hub laboratory is at the Royal London Hospital, with Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) at the six other hospital sites served.

The Partnership has three operational divisions:
Blood Sciences (including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry), Microbiology and Virology, and Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics.

The 2024/25 total operating costs across the Partnership were approximately £121m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa 860 WTE.
