Job Overview

The NIHR Moorfields Clinical Research Facility (‘CRF’) is a purpose‑built facility that supports world‑class experimental ophthalmic research to translate scientific advances into benefits for patients. Patients and volunteers visiting the CRF can take part in research programmes safely and effectively according to robust, ethically approved protocols. The Clinical Research Assistant will work under the direction of the clinical research nursing team to provide clinical and administrative support for the delivery of clinical research studies.

Post Holder’s Main Duties Will Include
  • Participate in the delivery of patient care
  • Contribute towards department organisation
  • Venepuncture after successful training and supervision
  • Collection, processing, storage and shipping of biological samples; give support to the clinical research team in the provision of a safe and caring environment
  • Assist with the induction and supervision of new staff undertaking this role
  • Work as a supportive and versatile team member

The Clinical Research Assistant will demonstrate a level of skill and understanding which enables them to take responsibility for specific tasks delegated by the nurse in charge in accordance with agreed policies and procedures.

Main duties of the job
  • To develop research awareness through in‑house training and completion of Good Clinical Practice training.
  • To attend appropriate research meetings.
  • Assist in the coordination, organisation and implementation of basic science and clinical trial protocols in accordance with International Conference on Harmonisation/ Good Clinical Practice (ICH/GCP). This will include complex commercial trials.
  • Using appropriate manual and computerized systems, ensure accurate collection and maintenance of all research records and results.
  • Assume day‑to‑day responsibility for specific research studies as delegated by the Senior Research Nurse.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of research study plans for delegated studies.
  • Assist in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), for use by all clinicians using the MEH CRF, both within and outside the unit.
  • Facilitate effective communication of complex research study information with all relevant research personnel, including: medical, nursing, administrative and pharmacy staff.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of research initiatives in liaison with other MEH CRF staff.
