Senior Physiotherapy Assistant – Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
We are looking for two Senior Physiotherapy Assistants to support our Neurosciences and Cancer Care Team on inpatient wards. The role can be permanent (37.5 hours per week) or a fixed-term secondment (37.5 hours per week for 28 weeks). You will be part of a dedicated physiotherapy team and a multidisciplinary group focused on early assessment, rehabilitation and timely discharge of patients with neurological conditions such as stroke, MS, traumatic brain injury and peripheral nerve injuries.
Key Responsibilities- Assist registered physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistant practitioners with patient care and rehabilitation.
- Support patients with functional activities of daily living, including walking, dressing, toileting and balance training.
- Teach and supervise simple exercise programmes and use of walking aids and therapeutic modalities (e.g., TENS, hot packs).
- Fit and teach the use of physiotherapy appliances and assist with moving and handling patients in line with Trust policies.
- Carry out delegated clinical tasks within a specified clinical area, working autonomously as directed by senior staff.
- Receptive to non‑clinical duties such as administrative tasks and limited supported teaching or supervision roles.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and participate in ward handovers, observation charts, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Completion of Physiotherapy Assistant competencies and demonstrated application in clinical practice.
- Level 3 Diploma in Allied Health Support, NVQ in Care or equivalent experience.
- Significant experience as a health‑care support worker, preferably within a physiotherapy service.
- Active membership of a weekend working rota (for permanent post).
- Strong communication skills; able to obtain valid informed consent and work within the legal framework with patients lacking capacity.
