Job Summary

The radiation protection department is part of the wider radiation services team, including nuclear medicine and radiotherapy physics at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre. We are seeking a Lead Clinical Scientist to provide MPE support for the Trust and support a number of external Trusts under service level agreements.

The department provides specialist scientific advice and technical support to radiology and other users of X‑ray imaging, including radiotherapy, nuclear medicine and breast screening services. The role supports optimisation of a wide range of imaging equipment and plays an active role in new imaging network activity.

You will receive a High‑Cost Area Supplement of 15% of your basic salary, subject to a minimum payment of £4,714 and a maximum payment of £5,941 per annum pro rata.

Main Duties of the Job
  • Act as a HCPC‑registered Clinical Scientist qualified to act as an MPE in diagnostic radiology imaging.
  • Lead the provision of radiation protection and scientific support to several hospitals.
  • Work closely with the head of radiation protection as part of the leadership team delivering services to a number of Trusts.
  • Collaborate with local service leads to ensure organisations deliver statutory obligations regarding the safe use of ionising radiation.
  • Support clinical scientists and technologists and contribute to staff development, including supervision of trainees undertaking the STP programme or equivalent.
  • Maintain or obtain MPE certification, or demonstrate progress toward certification within twelve months.
Essential Qualifications / Training
  • Good (1st or 2nd Class) Honours degree in a relevant subject (physics or engineering).
  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant branch of physics or medical physics to at least a Master’s level (MSc).
  • State registration with the Health & Care Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist.
  • Certificate of competence to practice as a Medical Physics Expert.
Essential Experience
  • Highly specialised training and practical experience in X‑ray imaging and radiation protection.
  • Experience with use and quality assurance testing of a range of highly technical equipment.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards and professional guidelines, and ability to communicate their application to other health professionals including senior management.
  • Experience of the research approval process regarding IRMER/HRA compliance.
  • Team working, auditing others, and clinical service provision.
Essential Skills
  • Effective communication of complex and sensitive information to patients, the public and multidisciplinary staff.
  • Analytical skills to interpret complex data, compare options, make judgments and determine causes of erroneous results.
  • Ability to interpret conflicting technical and scientific situations and recommend appropriate measures.
  • Proficiency in using VDUs and developing electronic documents, spreadsheets and clinical applications software.
  • Capability to teach, train and supervise students and staff across radiation protection.
  • Knowledge to propose and manage implementation of new procedures and equipment, and improve existing ones.
  • Priority management and flexible response to changing requirements.
