We are looking for highly motivated Clinical Scientists to join our comprehensive Genetics Service at the South East Genomic Laboratory Hub (SEGLH) at Guy's Hospital, to support the continued provision of service and development of new tests aligned to the NHSE Genetics Test Directory. We are recruiting to the Monogenics team, comprising core and specialist services in the SEGLH hub laboratory.
This post is a fixed term until 28/02/2027 to cover maternity leave but there may be the opportunity to apply for permanent roles with us in the future. The successful applicant will be dedicated and enthusiastic, joining a vibrant team of clinical scientists and pre-registered scientists. We prefer a hybrid working pattern with some time spent in our London office.
However, we are open to applications from candidates based in the UK who wish to work fully remotely.
The team provide single gene testing services as well as WGS, and there is active cross-training between other service groups in Genetics to ensure scientists achieve competency in both SNV and CNV data interpretation. Scientists are expected to contribute in one or more rare disease areas and to work with members of the clinical, scientific and technical teams to deliver a high-quality laboratory diagnostic service including participation a analysis is fully supported by the Bioinformatics team that is embedded with the Genetics department.
The scientist team are led by a management group that oversee five sub teams;
Core, Cancer, Neurology, Direct Tests and WGS. These staff work alongside five genomics coordinators who manage lab enquiries and triage new referrals.
The Genetics laboratories are part of Synnovis and are located within the Guy's Hospital site. The Genetics department is made up of more than 120 staff and with close links to Clinical Services throughout Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (GSTfT) and St George's Hospital Foundation Trust.
Person Specification- Essential
Qualifications:
HCPC clinical scientist registration (candidates working towards state registration will be considered). Desirable:
Higher degree in Biological Science.
- Experience
Experience working in a diagnostic genetics laboratory. Wide experience of both commonly used and specialised techniques for the genetic testing of samples, including troubleshooting. Experience of writing clinical diagnostic reports for patients referred for genomic testing. Experience of carrying out/supervising research and development projects.
- Desirable experience
Report checking and authorisation. Experience of working with a multidisciplinary team. Experience of lecturing, teaching and presenting in specialist area.
- Skills & Knowledge
Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, and ability to communicate complex ideas to a wide range of people at a local, national and international level. Advanced practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of genomics testing.
- Desirable skills
Line management experience and skills.
