About the RoleAs a Registered Building Inspector (Class 2B), you’ll play a pivotal part in ensuring our buildings are safe, compliant, and built to the highest standards. The role is focused on resolving and/or closing down building regulation applications made to the council that remain outstanding. You will therefore possess excellent record keeping skills, a good customer service manner as well as technical knowledge at Class 2B or above.
You’ll manage a varied caseload of schemes, and work closely with applicants, agents, and professionals across the sector. You will also liaise with the council’s Enforcement Officer as needed.
- Carry out plan appraisals and site inspections, ensuring compliance with Building Regulations and technical standards.
- Investigate and refer for enforcement action when necessary.
- Progress applications and recommend actions leading to completion certificates, in line with council delegation.
- Uphold the Registered Building Inspectors’ Code of Conduct and contribute to service improvements.
We’re looking for someone who brings both technical expertise and a collaborative spirit. Here are the skills and experience you’ll need:
These are essential criteria for the role
- Level 6 qualification in Building Control, or equivalent degree in a relevant subject (e.g., Building Surveying, Construction, Structural Engineering).
- Registered Building Inspector status (at least Class 2B) through the Building Safety Regulator.
- Membership of a relevant professional body (RICS, CABE, CIOB, or equivalent), with evidence of CPD.
In addition you will have
- Extensive knowledge of building construction, materials, and legislation.
- Proven experience managing building control caseloads, including commercial and residential projects.
- Strong understanding of regulations, codes of practice, and operational standards rules.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical and legal requirements to a range of audiences.
- IT proficiency and strong record management skills.
- Financial awareness and ability to manage resources effectively.
- Experience of supervision of Registered Building Inspectors.
- Commitment to maintaining CPD and upholding professional standards.
