This is an exciting entry-level opportunity for a graduate or career changer looking to build a career in credit and financial analysis. As a Junior Underwriter, you will work within our established underwriting team, supporting the assessment and decisioning of unsecured business loan applications. You will receive structured on-the-job training and mentorship, gaining hands-on exposure to real credit decisions from day one.
This role is well suited to individuals who are analytically minded, detail-oriented, and eager to develop a deep understanding of business finance and lending.
Key Responsibilities- Review and assess unsecured business loan applications submitted by UK SMEs, ensuring all required documentation is complete and accurate.
- Analyse company financial statements, including profit and loss accounts, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, to evaluate creditworthiness.
- Assess business performance, trading history, and key financial metrics to support well-reasoned credit recommendations.
- Conduct credit bureau searches and interpret credit reports to identify risk factors and repayment capacity.
- Verify applicant information through open-source research and data providers to detect inconsistencies or fraud indicators.
- Prepare clear and concise underwriting notes and credit summaries to support the decisioning process.
- Work collaboratively with senior underwriters, escalating complex or borderline cases with a clear summary of findings.
- Ensure all underwriting activity complies with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and responsible lending principles.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of underwriting processes and documentation standards.
- A degree (2:1 or above preferred) in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business, or a related discipline — OR demonstrable equivalent experience or aptitude.
- A-Level or equivalent qualifications demonstrating strong numeracy and analytical ability.
- Exceptional attention to detail — accuracy is critical in every aspect of this role.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data confidently.
- Clear and concise written communication skills, with the ability to summarise findings effectively.
- A methodical and structured approach to problem-solving and workload management.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple applications within defined turnaround times.
- A proactive attitude with a genuine interest in financial services, lending, and credit risk.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, technology-driven fintech environment.
- Familiarity with reading and interpreting company financial statements, including profit and loss accounts and balance sheets.
- Understanding of SME lending, credit risk, or financial analysis — gained through study, internship, or work experience.
- Exposure to credit bureau data such as Experian, Equifax, or similar commercial credit reporting tools.
- Experience working within a financial services, banking, or fintech environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel or similar tools for data analysis.
