The opportunity

Better Society Capital is currently re‑organising its operational infrastructure for the next phase of the organisation’s strategic development.

This newly created role brings the opportunity to shape and manage critical functions within BSC’s recently established Middle Office.

With responsibility for a small team, the Senior Risk, Reporting and Valuations Manager will have a broad range of responsibilities which are central to the success of BSC. The core responsibilities are managing the investment valuation and forecasting process for a diverse portfolio of social impact investments and monitoring and assessing some of BSC’s key risks.

What you will do

Provide a self‑starter mentality and be willing to help establish a Middle Office and build up its processes from scratch, including being involved in procurement of the key portfolio management system. Over time manage a small, dedicated team that will be responsible for:

  • Managing the periodic investment valuation process, ensuring valuations are fairly assessed (to involve critiquing manager‑supplied valuations and exercising judgement on overlay)
  • Overseeing cyclical financial performance reporting and providing commentary thereon
  • Maintaining relevant elements of the corporate risk framework
  • Key involvement in investment and corporate forecasting workstream, working alongside investment and finance teams
  • Critical project work, with, for example, significant involvement in the implementation of a new portfolio management system
What you will bring

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience of working in a middle office, preferably within an investment company
  • Experience of team leadership and delivery
  • Skilled at working closely with investment and finance professionals
  • Familiar with risk management practices
  • A passion and demonstrable commitment to improving lives in the UK
  • Qualified professional (e.g., accountant, CFA) with experience of fund finance / private assets and associated tax aspects
  • Experience of different approaches to valuing private unlisted assets

Skills, Abilities and Attributes

  • Highly proactive and motivated, using initiative to identify problems, advocate for solutions and prioritise high value work
  • A collaborative and co‑operative team player, with a hands‑on approach to pro‑actively solving problems with others and with a solution orientated mindset
  • Able to establish excellent working relationships across the organisation and working with multiple stakeholders
  • Excellent project management and analytical abilities and highly organised approach to complex initiatives
  • Adept communicator, in writing and when presenting, able to influence senior stakeholders and translate technical topics into business context
  • Attention to detail and a continuous improvement mindset
  • Customer‑centric approach
  • Strong ethical compass; highly literate and numerate
  • An interest in social impact and/or evidence of voluntary involvement with charities/social enterprises
