Role Purpose
The Mechanical Engineer will support the delivery, operation, and continuous improvement of mechanical building services across a complex, multi-building estate. The role focuses on ensuring mechanical systems operate safely, efficiently, and in line with statutory, contractual, and sustainability requirements.
Key Responsibilities- Support the operation, maintenance, and optimisation of mechanical systems including HVAC, heating, cooling, ventilation, and associated plant
- Provide technical input into planned and reactive maintenance activities
- Review mechanical designs, specifications, and technical submissions for compliance with standards and client requirements
- Assist with the delivery of mechanical projects, upgrades, and lifecycle replacement works
- Monitor system performance and identify opportunities for efficiency improvements and carbon reduction
- Ensure all mechanical works comply with relevant legislation, health & safety standards, and industry best practice
- Liaise with internal teams, specialist subcontractors, and stakeholders to coordinate works and resolve technical issues
- Support fault finding, root cause analysis, and corrective actions for mechanical plant failures
- Maintain accurate technical documentation, reports, and asset records
- Essential
: - Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering
- Experience working with mechanical building services in a complex estate (e.g. healthcare, education, commercial, or research environments)
- Sound knowledge of HVAC systems, plant rooms, and mechanical infrastructure
- Familiarity with relevant standards and legislation (e.g. H&S, pressure systems, water hygiene)
- Desirable
: - Working towards or holding professional registration (e.g. IEng or CEng)
- Experience in energy management or sustainability-focused projects
- Knowledge of CAFM systems and asset management practices
- Strong technical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
- Clear communication skills, both written and verbal
- Organised and methodical approach to managing tasks and priorities
- Proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement
- Commitment to maintaining a safe working environment
- Understanding of risk assessments, method statements, and permit-to-work systems
- Willingness to support audits and compliance activities
- Based within a large, live operational estate
- Exposure to plant rooms, laboratories, and occupied buildings
- Some flexibility required to support operational needs
