Generator Field Service Engineer – Thames Water

We currently have a great opportunity for you to join our waste treatment team as a Generator Field Service Engineer. As a successful candidate, your role will be to maintain, diagnose, repair and optimise the performance of a fleet of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) spark ignition biogas engines located across various Thames Water sites.

What you’ll be doing
  • Carry out planned and unplanned maintenance of the fleet of CHP spark ignition generators within a geographical region.
  • Work with current CHP support staff and suppliers to ensure all maintenance is carried out safely, with the least possible downtime and within budget.
  • Complete service records and reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Identify parts required for the order, lubricants, and waste.
  • Demonstrate a zero‑compromise attitude towards health, safety, and well‑being in all aspects of work.
  • Ensure excellent customer service and work to benefit other team members with skills from product training.
Location

Base location is anywhere in the Thames Valley, Home Counties and the London area. Depending on your location, you can be based at any of our sites.

Working Pattern

45 hours per week, Monday‑Friday, with standby rota additional payment and overtime at time and a half or double rates.

Requirements
  • In‑depth knowledge of operation and maintenance of internal combustion engines.
  • Ability to carry out thorough, comprehensive, and methodical diagnostics on engine, generator and associated systems.
  • Operate and optimise assets using engine/generator controls such as Com Ap, DIA.NE and TEM Evo.
  • Competent to work to a high level of quality, alone or as part of a team.
Skills & Experience
  • Ideally NVQ/C&G or an engine manufacturer's qualification in mechanical engineering.
  • Electrical qualification is an advantage, but not essential.
  • Proven working ‘hands‑on’ experience with internal combustion engines and associated systems.
  • Natural / Bio / AD Gas engine, CHP, and gas system experience is desirable but not essential.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Full UK driving licence.
