Railway Telecoms Apprentice

Level 6

Apprentice Standard – Rail and Rail Systems Engineer;
Rail and Rail Systems Engineer, Telecoms, Networks and Digital Specialism.

Salary – £31,289

Location – London – Hybrid working, with 50% office and 50% home over a 4‑week period. Hybrid arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.

Duration – 4 years plus End Point Assessment

Entry Requirements

You should already hold or be working towards a minimum of 2 GCSEs Grade 4 (C) and above including Maths and English Language (or equivalent) plus 3 A‑Levels at grades BBB (or equivalent) which must include Maths and/or Physical Sciences.

Candidates with equivalent Level 3 qualifications must hold or be on track to achieve one of the following:

  • BTEC National Diploma DDM, including Level 3 Mathematics and Physical Sciences (128 UCAS points)
  • EAL Technical Extended Diploma in Engineering Technologies, D, including Further Engineering Mathematics and other options relevant to Electrical, Mechanical or Civil engineering
  • Access to HE qualifications with Bend in 24 Distinctions and 21 Merits, with at least half the course in Mathematics and Physical Science subjects (122 UCAS points)
  • Equivalent Level 3 qualifications worth 120 UCAS points including Mathematics and Physical Sciences

Job Overview

Our Engineers focus on the systems and assets that form the foundation of our transport system. These Telecoms Engineers are responsible for the design and acceptance of new Communications Solutions across London Underground and other TfL transport modes, utilising both legacy and modern types of communications equipment. Systems delivered by these engineers support the delivery of an efficient and reliable transport service.

Skills – As an apprentice, your 3‑year development programme will be made up of up to 6 to 9 placement rotations, tailored to give you a breadth of experience. Below is a sample progression:

Year 1

Placement 1 – Operational Communications Systems (Stations) – 6 months – Involve in design reviews, system delivery,illig implementation, and project safety & assurance. Assist in ensuring designs meet specifications and apply project control processes, including risk assessment and hazard identification. Observe testing & commissioning activities.

Placement 2 – Fixed Transmission Systems – 3 months – Support delivery of IP and legacy communications systems, produce written notices to amend engineering standards, and engage Veterans investigations to identify root causes and recommend improvements.

Placement 3 – Wireless Systems – 3 months – Engage with wireless radio systems used by TfL staff and emergency services. Specify, test and deliver changes, assess complexity and novelty, undertake risk assessments and produce safety case evidence.

Year 2

Placement 4 – Surface Operational Systems – 6 months – Gain hands‑on experience with SCADA, CCTV, Radio and other surface operational systems.
