About

The Role

Transport for London (TfL) Engineering are looking for dynamic and highly motivated Engineers to join the Control and Protection Systems Team within Power Engineering. TfL’s Power Engineering team provides technical leadership and professional engineering support across all modes of TfL including to London Underground, DLR, London Trams, and Rail for London in relation to the operation, maintenance, renewal, and enhancement of the electrical power assets.

The Control and Protection Team provides specialist engineering support for computer control systems, Power SCADA, substation control systems and HV, LV and traction electrical protection schemes. The specialist protection team carries out protection coordination studies and protection scheme designs, configuration of programmable relays and controllers, and design coordination with other engineering disciplines. The team is responsible for the implementation of protection settings, protection change control, and for providing engineering assurance of the safe operation of the power distribution network.

The team works closely with and provides support to operational and maintenance colleagues in connection with the day‑to‑day operation of the power distribution system. Site activities, as a holder of a Safety Critical Licence, include interoperability testing, protection scheme testing, fault diagnostics, incident investigation, and commissioning of protection schemes in substations. In this role you will collaborate with teams across TfL to develop and implement complex engineering solutions safely, and within cost limitations.

Working together, you will undertake engineering design activities, design reviews as well as provide on‑site support, technical guidance, and advice as a trusted source of engineering expertise

Essential Skills, Knowledge & Experience
  • A competent team player, able to communicate complex technical matters to technical and non‑technical stakeholders both verbally and in written form.
  • Competent in technical document preparation, review and analysis.
  • Good analytical skills with an ability to objectively investigate problems and propose solutions while maintaining balanced judgement under pressure.
  • Proficient in the use of a range of power systems analysis packages including ETAP, Dig Silent Power Factory, ERACS or NePLAN. With a focus on load flow, fault level, arc flash and protection coordination studies.
  • Experienced in the configuration, parameterisation, and testing of protection relays using packages such as DIGSI, PCM
    600, S1 Agile, and Easergy Studio.
  • Incorporated Engineer with a degree in Electrical Engineering, recognised international equivalent, or possesses equivalent knowledge and experience. Chartered Engineer or qualifications working towards are preferred.
Knowledge
  • Good knowledge of control and protection equipment and associated commissioning procedures as applied to HV and LV power distribution systems.
  • Good knowledge of power system studies including load flow, fault level, transient stability and protection analysis etc.
  • Good knowledge of control and protection equipment and associated configuration software including IEC 61850 control and protection devices.
  • Knowledge of relevant TfL, National and International Standards.
Experience
  • An experienced power engineer with expertise in distribution and substation power supply protection and control equipment and systems.
  • Experience of power supply protection and control system design on railway and/or industrial HV and LV networks.
