Mechanical Engineering Manager – R

Northrop Grumman UK invites an experienced Mechanical Engineering Manager to lead the design, development, and production oversight of mechanical and electromechanical products for critical defence systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Line‑manage the mechanical engineering team, ensuring safety, performance, and alignment with organisational expectations.
  • Lead capability management – identify skill gaps, create development plans, and drive recruitment and outsourcing.
  • Oversee project delivery across the Mechanical teams, ensuring adherence to schedule, budget, quality, and technical performance.
  • Plan and allocate resources, tailor company processes for project needs, and manage functional plans and objectives.
  • Collaborate with the Technical Directorate to update and maintain company processes and defence‑specific Mechanical procedures.
  • Manage tools and assets required to support the Mechanical function’s capabilities.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for Mechanical initiatives within the Defence Operating Unit and contribute to the overall engineering strategy.
Required Competencies & Experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and supporting defence‑grade mechanical and electromechanical products and systems.
  • Strong analytical skills – proficiency in reviewing drawings, designs, analyses, and data.
  • Proven ability to take a product through the full development lifecycle.
  • Excellent problem‑solving capability and experience solving complex technical challenges.
  • Outstanding organisational skills and effective workload prioritisation.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills – able to influence, motivate, and present clearly at all levels.
  • Leadership experience – strategic thinking, team building, and people development.
Essential Qualifications / Experience
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical subject, or equivalent extensive industry experience.
  • Experience with in defence, maritime, or aerospace sectors.
  • Working knowledge of Mechanical Design Defence Standards and regulations.
  • Leadership experience in high‑performing teams.
  • Hands‑on experience reviewing mechanical drawings, analyses, and project documentation.
  • Substantial experience in a Mechanical Engineering role covering:
    • Design for manufacturability and continuous improvement methods such as Design for Six Sigma.
    • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical design fundamentals.
    • Understanding of production and manufacturing techniques.
    • Design for safety, security, maintainability, and reliability.
    • Application of analysis techniques – FEA, CFD, electrical load studies.
    • Materials knowledge, including REACH and RoHS regulations.
Preferred Qualifications / Experience / Knowledge
  • Chartered Engineer status.
  • Experience with CAD tools such as CREO.
  • Experience using PLM systems such as Windchill.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent.
Security Clearance

Must be able to obtain and maintain a UK Government Security Clearance – SC (Senior Confidential).
