Facade Engineer role at Buro Happold
Want to work with the most sought‑after minds and most‑talked‑about projects? Your design and site experience in the Facades Discipline might just make you our new Façade Engineer.
We're looking for someone who wants to work on technically demanding projects with an enviable portfolio – including recent deliveries such as the Museum of the Future in Dubai, Battersea Power Station redevelopment in London, and Aviva Studios in Manchester – and can push boundaries.
- Work as part of a single or multi‑disciplinary team, attending and chairing meetings with clients, architects, contractors, etc. in an advisory capacity.
- Develop jobs technically from initial client ideas or as remediation proposals.
- Attend site to monitor and assess installation or condition.
- Provide input on bids.
- Support senior staff in providing strong design leadership on Façade issues to the client’s design team.
- Maintain good client relations throughout the job and work with a variety of stakeholders.
- Mentor more junior team members.
We envision that this position will interest a technically competent person with a solid foundation of Façade Engineering experience and provide an opportunity to further advance your career whilst working on some iconic global projects. In return, we expect you to be able to demonstrate:
- Experience of Design, ideally including the majority of the following: at least two materials (aluminium, steel, concrete, stone, glass, timber).
- Awareness of basic weather performance issues.
- Architectural component detail design including aesthetics.
- Fundamental building physics (ventilation, solar gain control, thermal insulation, glare control).
- Structural design principles (movement, tolerance, support, restraint).
- Glass structural design.
- Awareness of basic sustainability design drivers.
- Understanding of passive fire protection design strategies (cavity barriers, fire stopping, intumescent paint).
- Experience of the practical aspects of handling and fabricating typical cladding materials.
- Knowledge of typical cladding systems.
- Site experience of at least three systems: traditional masonry, stick curtain walling, unitised curtain walling, precast, rainscreen, and SFS.
- Good awareness of the problems and constraints of the other major design disciplines (architectural, structures, services, fire engineering, acoustics, computer modelling).
- Achieved or working towards Chartered Engineer, Chartered Building Surveyor, Professional Engineer or equivalent registration with ECUK or another appropriate body.
- Solid education in Structural Engineering, MEP Services, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or a joint qualification in any of these; other formal qualifications such as an MSc in Façade Engineering from Bath University or a PhD level research would be an advantage.
- Ideally experience working on international projects, domestic projects, and willingness to travel from time to time.
Ideally you will be an established engineer who can apply design principles in a practical manner with a secure technical base. This role will require you to understand and react to the changing design of the overall building, and communicate your ideas clearly in speech and good quality hand sketches or other means as necessary. The ability to develop ideas convincingly “on the page” in a meeting will be a significant advantage.
Aplace for everyone

We are working to change the lack of representation of marginalised groups in the built environment. We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who feels under‑represented in the industry. We have much to learn from one another. Embracing differences allows us to develop the most innovative and elegant solutions.
